Who is taking the children?

by: Dragon is hiding Author IconMail Icon
One night, Sabrina was feeling particularly sad about her mother. "I do wish she was here right now!" She sobbed to Bo. Winter nights were the loneliest for her, especially because sometimes her father had to help with night patrols, leaving Sabrina at home all by herself. She wrapped herself up in her blanket and rocked back and forth.
Bo, sensing Sabrina's sorrow, scampered over and whined softly. Prodding his head under Sabrina's blanket, he nuzzled the girl's leg.
"Aww, thanks Bo." Sabrina hugged his neck. Patting the bed, she invited him up. "C'mon, boy!" After Bo leapt up, Sabrina cuddled him until she began drifting off to sleep. She dreamt of years past, when her mother was not a fairy, and still alive as a human.
"Sabrina, you must help your father find out who took the Owens children. Once you find them, you will find all the other missing children. Hurry, before it's too late." Sabrina dreamt her mother had come back and visited her.
"But what do I do, Mother?"
"Your father has joined the night patrol; he is helping others find the children already. However, he has an idea that he believes nobody else will listen to, so he keeps quiet. You need him to voice his idea to you and leave the night patrol. Together, you and he shall set off to find the missing children. His plan may be right; he just needs to voice it." Morgana prophecied.
Sabrina woke with a start. "Daddy?" she cried out, rubbing the sleep from her eyes. She listened as her voice echoed through empty halls. Daddy was not back yet.
Hugging Bo tighter, Sabrina lay down, and sleep overcame her as she waited for her father to return from the night patrol.
"Time for school, Sabrina! Bo, you should know you're not allowed on the bed! Down, boy!" Sabrina's father's voice softened when he saw Sabrina hugging Bo as she slept. Patting the dog, he apologized. "Sorry, Bo. I should've seen that it was Sabrina and not you. Sabrina!" he shook his daughter's shoulder. "Sabrina, time for school, my little one."
Sabrina moaned softly and stretched out.
Bo licked her face before jumping down.
"Bo!" Sabrina giggled. "Not nice!" Sitting up in bed, she hugged her father. "Good morning, Daddy. How was the patrol last night? Did you find anything or anyone yet?"
Her father sat on the bed, where Bo had been lying just a moment ago. "No, sweetie, we haven't. I have an idea for what we could do, although it doesn't seem like the team finds it a good idea."
"What's your idea?"
"I believe it's the wolf taking our children, and so I would like to offer a meat sacrifice to the wolf. Once he comes out, and eats the meat, we'll follow him back into his dwelling, where the children ought to be. The Owens siblings, too."
"That sounds dangerous, Daddy. Can I help in any way?" Remembering what Morgana had said in the dream last night, Sabrina thought this would be the perfect way to follow her mother's advice.
"It is dangerous, Sabrina. Which is why I will not be letting you help! The best way you can help right now is go to school and do well in your subjects." He stood up, signalling the end of the conversation.
Sabrina hung her head. So close! "Yes, Daddy." How am I going to make him let me help? She wondered.
That night, when her father left for the night patrol, Sabrina slipped out of bed and out onto her balcony, to watch her father meet up with the rest of the night patrol. She couldn't hear what they were saying, though she saw her father talking, and everyone else shaking their heads. Morgana suddenly appeared next to Sabrina. "Try again tomorrow, Sabrina. If he gets frustrated enough, he might take you. For now, follow his instructions and be a good girl. You need your sleep if you want to have energy to hunt a wolf."
The night came and went, and when Sabrina's father woke her up the next morning, she pleaded her case. "Please let me help, Daddy. I promise I'll be an- an-" Sabrina stumbled as she tried to find the right word. "-an asset. And I will follow your directions. I'll do whatever you say. And I won't complain. I promise. Just give me a chance. Please?"
Her father sighed. "I know I will regret this, but, grab your warmest clothes and pack them, because we'll go hunting together."
Sabrina lit up with delight, and rushed to pack her warmest clothes.
She and her father left the house in silence, her father grabbing some meat from the meat house, and placing it far enough away from the house so the wolf would not attack them when he came out. "Now, it's just the waiting game." said her father. "We have to wait for the wolf to come. And when he does. Make sure you do exactly as I say. Otherwise, it could lead to disastrous results." His voice was stern and serious.
Sabrina nodded, sensing the gravity of the issue. Settling down next to her father, she began to wait.
