Kyle only rarely took an interest in his father’s finds. They often became dust collectors. But this time the medallion interested him because of its supposed magical nature. It triggered his curiosity. Reading through instructions his dad came upon him, “You finally taking interest in the world outside of your virtual world?”
Kyle rolled his eyes, “This just intrigued me.”
“History is absolutely filled with mysterious items like that. Things that can’t be explained. The Baghdad battery its purpose isn’t understood to this day.” Harold saw a possibility to connect with Kyle. “Why don’t you keep that piece of history.”
Kyle perked up, “You mean it?”
“Absolutely.”
“Cool.” Kyle proceeded to retreat to his bedroom smiling. That satisfied Harold who rarely received a positive display of emotion.
Kyle examined the medallion playing with its settings. He set it aside as he tried to decide what to become. He thought that he’d ask his friend Marcus. Texting Marcus about the shapeshifting medallion.
<No way it works. You are lying to me if you say it does.>
<Haven’t tested it yet.>
<Come over it should be good for a laugh. My parents are out of town for the weekend. We can order pizza and play some shooters or racing games after. Get in some one v one on.>
<Sounds good I will be over shortly.> Tossing in a set of clothes in his backpack along with the medallion and his own remote. Kyle bounded down the stairs.
His father reading another history book caught him heading out, “Where are you off too?”
“Over to Marcus’s house. I want to show off the medallion.”
Harold grinned, “I guess that is okay. Just let me know tomorrow if you are going to stay an extra night.”
“Will do.” Kyle often took advantage of his father’s permissive nature.
Harold hated being hard on his children. Losing their mom already cost them so much. He lost his way losing himself in the past. Not a man for counseling he drifted through life. He should of asked after Kyle’s homework. His attention shifted back to his book as his concern waned. It would be fine he told himself.
Marcus welcomed Kyle into his home. “Where is this magical artifact?” He laughed.
“I don’t believe it is real. I thought it looked cool.” Kyle produced the medallion for inspection.
Marcus eyed it, “Doesn’t look magical.” He tossed it to Kyle.
“Here goes nothing.” Kyle placed it over his head. The cool metal sank into Kyle’s flesh.
Drawing a, “What the hell?” from Marcus.
Kyle felt about trying to find it. He decided to try the claims of the medallion. His body stretched taller.
Marcus now looking up at Kyle, “This is awesome. Think of all the things we can do. We could become anyone.”
Thinking of becoming anyone triggered an idea. “Give me a couple minutes. I want to try something.”
“What? Why can’t I see?”
“It is personal.” Kyle walked into a bathroom and shut the door behind him. He shrank back to his normal size. He then concentrated on his face in the mirror. His hair curled as twirled on its way to his shoulders. His nose turned up as he lost all sign of his patchy facial hair. Kyle’s face softened as it took on familiar features. Familial features in fact. Similar too a more mature version of his sister. His eyes misted with the emotional upheaval of seeing his mother’s face in the flesh. He hoped he got it right as he whispered, “I love you Kyle.” He’d almost forgotten his mother’s voice. He hated himself for it.
Marcus interrupted his contemplation. “Come on man I want to see that medallion in action.”
Kyle recovered wiping his eyes. Removing redness as he restored his natural form. He exited the bathroom, “What do you want to try?”
“Did you give yourself boobs and play with them?”
“None of your business. What do you think we should try?”
