After a few seconds of sprinting, you're bent double and wheezing for breath. You're not as young as you used to be. Fifty years of bad dieting and zero exercise have left you unable to catch a cold, let alone one of the super-powered individuals. Fortunately you have a whole base of soldiers paid to do it for you. You limp to a phone and call security.

"This is Doctor Carl Von Hellman," you say breathlessly. "One of the specimens, Maria, has stolen my radio. I want it back! Furthermore I want her brought to my laboratory for further testing as soon as possible." That will teach her to mess with me, you think evilly. "And make sure you bring the real one this time. If I have another clone dissolving on my operating table, you'll be the one cleaning it up!"

"Um, sure thing, sir," the young man on the other end of the phone says.

The superhumans are nothing more than lab rats and you fully intend to learn how their powers work and, more importantly, how they can be extracted, copied or transferred. While the rambunctious superhumans currently occupying the base may be useless in combat settings, if you were able to apply their powers to already trained and loyal soldiers, that would be another thing entirely.

Though officially a technician serving under Doctor Cecile, in practice you have your own lab and free reign to conduct whatever experiments you wish, thanks to your government benefactors. There are only a few snags. The first, a minor quibble, is that Doctor Cecile keeps trying to sabotage your research. The second is that the specimens are a nightmare to work with, always breaking out of containment, always introducing ugly variables to your pure science.

You rub the stub of your left arm. A few months ago you'd succeeded in isolating one of Hoppers portals. Unfortunately it had violently destabilised, cleanly severing your arm below the elbow and scarring the left side of your face. Due to the ongoing treatment for the resulting detached retina, you've taken to wearing an eyepatch. As if the specimens didn't already regard you as an "evil scientist" enough.

Still, no science without sacrifice. Today the nature of your research is...
