Chapter #3

Captive Lily

by: Amazing Colossal Archive Author IconMail Icon
The sharp, sudden sound rang out from your right. A dull, undulating noise continues from that direction, so you turn your head to find a glass jar rolling across a countertop on the far wall. It bumps against the lip of a sink, comes to a stop, and rolls back slightly. There's something unusual about the lid. The metal cap appears to have holes in it. You leave your bag and the device behind as you investigate.

Sure enough, the lid does have holes punched through it. Maybe something is inside, a small mouse or an insect perhaps. That wouldn't be out of place in the professor's laboratory. She must have done experiments on living creatures during her work with the matter transposer, but what an unusual place to store them. And why did it - it's not a mouse! It's a person!

Inside the glass container, a small woman, three inches tall or thereabouts, dressed in pastel blue shirt and khaki shorts. She has her hands pressed to the wall. Her little mouth moves silently and she pounds a fist on the glass.

You carefully tilt the toppled jar and unscrew the cap. You bend down and lean close to the young woman as she exits. The device clearly works, but what was she doing there like this? She wastes no time giving you the details, saying her name is Lily, and she was an assistant for Professor Montana. The professor suspected her of leaking information about her research to others on campus, but she claims innocence.

You consider how you heard rumors about the professor's invention around campus which set you on this desperate path to begin with. While you didn't hear them from Lily herself, there were murmurings, silly what-ifs about shrink rays and such, out there for ears to hear. Most people laughed them off and forgot about them, but not you.

Lily says she's been locked in that jar for almost a week. The professor is serious about secrecy, growing more paranoid as she perfects her invention. She thanks God that you're here to help her. She urges you to get the matter transposer before it's too late.
