From her youngest years Yuna had never been comfortable with spectacle or big crowds. While the utter adoration she received in her home village was vaguely flattering (and intimidating) Yuna had never been one to milk a crowd or use her public image for her own game. For one thing large groups gathering in one place was a magnet for Sin. For another, the reputation of Lord Braska had always felt like a hindrance for her...something more she needed to overcome in order to stake her own claim to life and earn a proper name for herself. That contrast set her apart from the other, more corrupt elements of Yevon, which made her all the more beloved by the people. That certain individuals, like Seymour, had tried to use her like an object for their own political games (she still remembered the way her image in that skimpy dress had been broadcast all across Spira as a show of Seymour's truimph) had made her all the more skittish.
It was pure chance that she happened to have a rather good singing voice. The first big concert hadn't even been her at all. A rival Sphere Hunter named La Blanche had stolen her dress sphere and effectively used her image to promote a concert and sell her own merchandise. It had somewhat spooked and galled her how many people had shown up for the event. She had hoped that avoiding politics and (almost literally) running away from the public spotlight would dampen her appeal after the victory over Sin. Apparently the opposite was true. Her apparent shyness regarding the public had combined with her celebrity status and hero worship to make Spira downright obsessed with her. That she had carefully hidden a rather attractive little body under those modest robes for so many years (apparently equipped with a much more generous figure than any had suspected, to say nothing of her tight stomach and cute little butt!) and remained single and presumably chaste like a good little Yevon girl even after the collapse of Yevon only heightened Spira's adoration and fascination. To her chagrin, the promise of an appearance by Lady Yuna, the savior of Spira and bringer of the Eternal Calm, was an instant draw for people all over the world.
As it happened, Yuna herself had had to take advantage of that very popularity to prevent a war. She had gathered an even larger crowd in the Thunder Plains and performed a lovely song inspired by a long dead kindred spirit desiring to serenade a lover who met a tragic end.
The concert had been a success and likely saved the world all over again. But it had certain consequences. One of those was the constant hounding Yuna received to promote one event or another. She had flatly refused at first. But the beggars had become more and more clever. "Blitzball is a sacred tradition! It gave the people hope in the face of Sin's despair! It kept the world united over a thousand years! And the game has always had a Maester to mark the opening game of the season! But there aren't any more Maesters to be found! If the Lady Yuna won't come out, who will give honor to the players and continue the grand traditions holy and otherwise that saw Spira through the harsh times?"
Sacrifice your personal anxieties for the good of the world. Yes, they had certainly learned how to push her buttons. So here she was, standing up on a gaudy floating platform in the middle of an enormous stadium, a hundred dancing lights illuminating her, decked out in her songstress uniform, a jumbotron giving an upclose view of her dancing and singing. Surprisingly, La Blanche had been all too happy to volunteer her resources to the cause. That it would necessitate her rival's particularly...showy brand of showmanship was just another sacrifice Yuna made for the sake of the event. Really, more people were likely tuning in for the preshow performance than the actual game. The eyes of the whole world were literally on her! The good news was that she was doing a decent job of performing, and even the few times she tripped over the words to her song or missed a dance step the audience didn't seem to notice or care! Lady Yuna was making a public appearance! All of Spira was ecstatic, eating up every little moment like a starving dog waiting breathlessly for any little scrap its mistress was willing to toss it.
Of course, poor Yuna was about to provide the world a full course meal. Just when everything seemed to be going fine....
