"Can we open the gifts now?" she asked, already knowing the answer.
Herman chuckled. "Not yet, sweetie. We need to eat some food first."
Tamara pouted good-naturedly and settled in for a long night of eating and socializing. Herman and Claudia exchanged a knowing glance. This was one of the few nights off from their busy schedules, and they were determined to make the most of it.
As they sat down to dinner, Herman couldn't help but feel a pang of sadness. He had always hoped to have a son to follow in his footsteps and take over the family construction company one day. But life had other plans, and Tamara showed little interest in the business side of things. She was more concerned with her fashion sense and social life.
Despite this, Herman loved his daughter dearly and was proud of the young woman she was becoming. He knew that she would find her own path in life, even if it wasn't the one he had envisioned for her.
As the night wore on, Tamara grew restless. "Can I go now?" she asked her parents for what felt like the hundredth time.
Herman sighed. "Not yet, sweetie. We're just getting started."
Tamara pouted again and checked her phone for what felt like the hundredth time that evening. Herman knew that she wanted to join her friends and celebrate the start of a new year in their own way.
"I think we can let her go," Claudia said, seeing the look on Tamara's face. "But promise me you'll be back by midnight?"
Tamara nodded eagerly and grabbed her coat before rushing out the door. Herman watched her go with a mix of emotions. He was happy that she was happy, but sad that their special night together was coming to an end.
As they finished dinner and began to clean up, Herman turned to Claudia with a thoughtful expression. "Do you think Tamara will ever find her way back to our family business?"
Claudia put a hand on his arm. "Only time will tell, dear. But we'll be here for her no matter what."
Herman nodded, feeling a sense of hope and resignation wash over him. He knew that their family was more important than any business or legacy.
As they finished cleaning up and said their goodbyes for the night, Herman couldn't help but wonder what the new year held in store for them all...
