James wasn't very convinced by the idea that the pen had magical powers, but he did appreciate a fine pen. Even the nib was engraved, it was probably just the name of the manufacturer. The script was clearly foreign, so he just dismissed it as unreadable. Finding a scrap of paper he started to write at his desk.
One fine morning James woke to find he'd received an elegant gift. It was a pen, but not just any pen.
He had to admire how smoothly the ink flowed. The light streamed in through his window, and the mirror on his desk ensured that the desk was always well lit. As much for inspiration he decided to continue as if he were testing the pen for magical powers.
James realised the pen was truly magical, when a stray lock of hair fell across his face.
No sooner had he written the line than a lock of hair did fall across his face. He gave a snort at the coincidence. Tucking it behind his ear he went to go back to his writing.
Then it struck him the lock of hair was blonde.... Instantly he snapped his gaze up from the page and looked at his reflection in the mirror.
Jack's chestnut brown hair was now a golden blonde.
He mouth dropped open, and he tried to speak a couple of times. But he couldn't even frame a question so he just gaped like a landed fish. Until he looked accusingly at the pen. The nib caught a ray of light and glinted back at him.
To disprove it, James went to pick up the pen again. His fingers shook too much, and he dropped it before he could write a word let alone a sentence.
He felt his heart racing and his breathing coming in gulps. He pushed backwards from the chair, as it scraped over the floor, he stood up in ungainly fashion.
This had to be dream, a hallucination.... a something...
His hair taunted him as it flashed across the corner of his eyes as he got dressed. He was going to have some breakfast.... and come back up with a full stomach. He needed to know if anyone else could see his suddenly blonde locks...
He settled his nerves as he grabbed the door handle.
