The world fell out from RJ in that exact moment. He suddenly felt cold, like his blood had become ice in his veins. The feeling was made only worse by Haley's serious but neutral stare. It was like she was carved out of stone.
The young man gave a shuddering breath, suddenly aware of the rapid beating of his heart, before he answered. "Y-Yeah...I suck at lying. Never really it done too often."
Haley nodded, never breaking eye contact. "Trust me, I can tell. It's not really a bad thing, though."
RJ raised a brow. "So how did you know exactly?"
Haley gave a sigh. "If Zelda had really found someone to date, she would've called me. Wouldn't have been able to shut up about it and I would have enjoyed every moment it." She gave RJ an inquisitive look. "So what made you and her lie about all of this?"
RJ knew if he lied, he was dead meat as Haley made good on her threat. If he told the truth, Zelda would make his life Hell if she didn't just eat him.
Well, the truth shall set you free, he thought.
"You see, Zelda promised me that I wouldn't have to pay rent for several months if we did this. She wanted you off her back for a little while. She thought this was her best bet."
Haley shook her head. "All I want is for her to be happy. She seems content to just close herself off. It's not healthy nor is it right." She then thought over what RJ said. "Is rent here that bad? I always thought my little cub was reasonable about those kinds of things."
RJ fidgeted. How do you tell someone that their daughter threatened to eat you every month if you couldn't pay your rent?
"Well...it is." RJ started, gathering his courage. "It's just that, Zelda added a little clause to my lease."
Haley's eyes narrowed. "What clause?" Her tone was low, underlined with displeasure.
RJ wished the ground could have opened a swallowed him right then and there. "Zelda told me that if I don't have, my rent first thing every month...she'd eat me."
Haley stared at him for the longest time and RJ couldn't tell what she was thinking. That was at least before the immense lioness let out an angry bark.
