There was Antoine falling before her, just out of reach, nothing she could do. Time seemed to stop as Eggman spoke the word that would devastate not only her husband but her whole world “detonate.” What froze Bunnie’s blood wasn’t the paralyzing light, the searing heat, or the chunks of metal now scattered across the forest floor. It was the unmoving form of her husband lying there, his body covered in terrible burns down to the bone in some places.
“ANTOINE!!!”
Bunnie bolted awake, a cold sweat covering her entire body as the same vivid memory, her own personal nightmare replayed through her mind once again. It had been months since she’d moved away from Knothole, abandoning her duty and leaving Antoine behind. Getting rid of her robotics was a dream come true, she could be normal, she could…raise a family. The thought brought a brief smile to her face as the crushing weight of reality fell back upon her. She was nearly useless to the resistance now, her robotics, her curse had been what allowed her to protect those she cared about. Looking back they’d allowed her to help and protect so many. “Now, ah’m not good for much other than as a vegetable farmer.” Her voice was characterized by pain, she wanted so badly to undo her mistakes, she’d even be willing to be re-roboticized but nothing would be able to change the past, nothing could undo the pain caused by the fulfillment of her selfish wish.
Getting up slowly, she reached for her hat, sitting atop her small bedside table Bunnie made her way through her modest home. A short hallway connected her bedroom to the rest of the home. Making her way quickly through the home and out the front door out onto her home’s modest porch a gentle breeze stirred up blowing through Bunnie’s sweat stained fur and hair. She didn't even notice the nightmare caused her to be drenched in sweat.
Gazing out over the modest oasis she now called home, one of the few sanctuaries of the Great Dessert and Mobius as a whole. Slowly she let her eyes lift to the stars above her, the ephemeral dots of light strangely comforting the scarred fighter.
“Please, if ah’ve done anything right with mah life, all ah want is to be able to do is protect someone again. Ah already failed mah Antoine, and…” Bunnie’s voice slowly trailed off. This last nightmare had been the last straw for the poor drained bunny and even as she tried to continue speaking her words slowly devolved into subdued sobs that quickly turned into a keen wail as Bunnie thought about all she’d lost, and in her own mind it was all her fault. She wasn’t sure how long she stood outside her home sobbing into the darkness, but eventually the tears stopped flowing. Her body simply too exhausted to produce anymore tears rather than her sorrow leaving her. Bunnie turned and slowly trudged back into her home. Taking a minute to walk through her home she crawled back into bed and thankfully sleep quickly reclaimed Bunnie, in part due to the emotional exhaustion she was suffering. Unbeknownst to Bunnie, ever since she had looked to the skies and made her heartfelt plea, several stars had begun to glow brighter and brighter before vanishing completely from the night sky off to fulfill the duty entrusted to them, to bring Bunnie someone to protect and love.
