Daniel shut the door to the apartment, setting the statue down on the coffee table, glad to get the freaky thing out of his hands. As he opened to door to the fridge, his housemate, Chris, came out from his room.
"Hey, Dan, where've you been?" Chris started. "Party starts in like an hour!"
"Party?" Dan asked, not looking up from the fridge.
"Yeah, I told you before, I wanted to have a few people over today, and--" a sudden stop caused Dan to look up at his friend. "What is that?" Chris asked, gesturing to the statue.
"Yeah, sorry, it's just some dumb thing I picked up in town," Dan sighed, abandoning his quest for a decent snack, "we can put it away when people come over." Chris's silence caused Daniel to look back at him. He found his friend staring at the statue, unblinking. A quick snap of his fingers brought Chris out of it, shaking his head and smiling.
"What? Oh, yeah, no, it's cool, it can stay."
It was Dan's turn to stare. "Seriously? Look at that thing! I don't even know why I bought it, really."
"Dude, it's fine," Chris said, surprisingly strongly, "it can stay." Dan paused for a moment, and then just shrugged.
"Whatever." Dan checked his watch, and asked, "you said people would be over in an hour?" When Chris nodded, Dan sighed, and said, "Alright. Real quick, I'm going to go..."
