Chapter #3Sailor Pluto by: faith The Sailor Senshi have many secrets. Somewhere on the Moon, overlooking the Sea of Serenity, lies the ruins of a vast city and a magnificent castle. Whether by luck or some bit of magical protection lingering from the days of the Silver Millenium, none of innumerable probes, telescopes, or visitors making one small step on the moon's surface have discovered this particular ruin. This was the grand court of the Senshi in a forgotten age. And as one might expect, such an edifice contains secrets within secrets.
One of those secrets is a doorway deep within the inner keep of the castle. Behind that door, in a physical sense, there is only the white stone that makes up the walls of the castle. That's because the door doesn't connect to a place so much as a WHEN. It connects to the dangerous pathways of Time. Walk those paths long enough you could end up centuries in the past or in a time yet to come. And should you so desire, you could alter the present or the future by manipulating events in one of these other times.
That of course is exactly why this door and the passages beyond have their own guardian.
Setsuna Meiou, otherwise known as Sailor Pluto (Pluu to her friends) is by far the greatest enigma amongst the Senshi. Supposedly she had stood as a lonely sentinel of Time for the whole span of human history. That was probably true, technically speaking. The problem with a door that literally exists both outside of and yet concurrent with every point in human history is that it makes measuring the exact length of Pluto's tenure here almost impossible. If the Senshi are not in effect immortal and eternally young, then at the very least they age at an absurdly slow rate beyond a certain age (witness how the Senshi one thousand years from the present appear, at most, to be in their twenties!). Guessing Pluto's true age is therefore impossible, especially considering that her mastery of Time allows her to leave her post to (for example) help Michiru and Haruka raise a baby Sailor Saturn for however long that requires then pop back half a second after she left and take up her guardianship yet again!
What little is known about her is that, while on watch, she appears inexpressibly lonely. The only friend to speak of is the occasional visit from Chibiusa, the daughter of Sailor Moon and Tuxedo Mask born roughly a thousand years from now. She seems much happier in the present, living with her fellow outer senshi and their adopted (potentially world destroying!) daughter. Per the manga, Setsuna works as a nurse in the school that Hotaru (Sailor Saturn) currently attends, and taking care of sick children is one of the few times she appears unabashedly happy.
What relationships Pluto has had are obviously few and far between. Some sources say she had an unrequited love for Tuxedo Mask that she never followed through on. Less tragically, living together with a lesbian couple and helping them raise a child certainly suggests that Setsuna could have a more than casual relationship with Michiru and Haruka. That being said, her years (centuries? Millenia?) alone keeping watch over Time has left her rather quiet and reserved. In some ways she is kindest member of the Outer Senshi, usually showing sympathy where Neptune and Uranus show aggression. Yet she is also the most fatalistic, for who knows better what is to come than the Senshi of Time? More generally, being cut off from human contact has made her reclusive by nature. The Senshi aside, her only meaningful contact with anyone tended intruders trying to get through the Time Door. For that reason, she prefers to avoid strangers as much as possible and limit her contact to her friends. Of all the Senshi, she is perhaps the least comfortable with dealing with awkward situations, strong emotions, or intimate relationships due to the simple fact that such things have been few and far between for her. For someone so closed off and constantly on guard, let alone a woman who may have gone hundreds of years without another human being seeing or touching her, the mortifying situation Pluto is about to find herself in is no doubt going to be especially hard for her to deal with.
Speaking of which, where was Pluto when her unfortunate circumstances began? indicates the next chapter needs to be written. |
