As Harry got closer, he thought it looked slightly different. Something about the stand... It was hard to tell with the cloth covering it.
He just wanted a quick look at his family. Telling himself, he had kept his promise to Dumbledore... He hadn't sought it out... But when it was near enough to touch, Harry sighed... it was a different mirror.
Pulling the dust sheet away, it slid down the glass and slithered onto the floor, forming a loose pile around Harry's feet.
There was writing around the frame of the mirror, and Harry ran his fingers over them just enjoying the texture. When he looked at his reflection he was disappointed. It was simply himself, and the rather unkempt room behind him.
Twisting this way and that, he tried to see any magical qualities in the glass. It was only when he leaned in close, to examine his face that he saw anything. The scar was still there... the glasses were still there... but... his in the mirror his hair was tidier.
He stood back upright as he tried to work out the purpose of the mirror. Was it meant to flatter the owner... or to inspire them to better present themselves... or was it instructing him...
Perhaps Hermione would be better able to work out it's purpose, or Ron would see something different. In either case, Harry wanted to consult with his friends, if he found this room again... and if he didn't no harm done.
Harry almost stumbled into the mirror with his feet caught in the dustcloth at his feet. But found his balance before the worst happened. He shook his head at his reflection and carefully stepped out of the tangled cloth.
Something about the reflection was different... again.
If he hadn't shaken his head he might not have noticed. His reflection had longer hair, it was just short of his shoulders, and even as he looked it took on a tidier aspect.
Shifting from a chestnut mess, reminding him vaguely of a lion's mane. It shifted into a tidier curls... similar to Hermione's but shorter.
Running a hand over his head, he confirmed that the reflection wasn't real. It looked realistic, but Harry's hair simply wasn't that long.
Frankly it was starting to freak Harry out. The changes ... and not knowing the nature of the mirror ... well ... both brought their concerns. The mirror could be a Slytherin artifact... But Harry didn't want to just flee because he was afraid. That wasn't a Gryffindor characteristic. Courage was feeling the fear and still doing the right thing... He'd heard that somewhere.
