Chapter #6

Close Call

by: evil dude Author IconMail Icon
Richie knew that as a cop his primary mission was to help people and now that he had plenty of gear there was no reason for him to attempt to avoid danger if it meant saving innocent lives. With his riot shield ready to bat aside any threat he came across Richie moved down the street quickly looking for any signs of life in the nearby houses.

Things looked pretty grim with several homes broken into or boarded up, many had doors that swung gently in the frigid breeze as snow piled inside or open windows that were cracked from unknown damages. Any house that wasn't broken open was locked up tight, especially on the ground floor and few had dared to leave any sort of lighting on.

Richie let out a sigh when he received no answer after knocking on the front door of a large house with boarded up windows and a single lamp on in an upstairs bedroom. "Either no one is home, or they don't want to talk to me." he said solemnly as he walked back down the driveway and continued moving up the street.

Just as he was about to pass by an intersection and move onto the next block a small utility van sped down the opposite sidewalk and swerved sharply around a mailbox onto the next street. Just as soon as it had appeared it vanished again into the thick snowfall as the driver desperately tried to escape the monsters that had risen in Glitterice. Richie leaned onto a bent stop sign for support as he listened to the van disappear into the distance.

Had he already crossed the street its unlikely the driver would have seen him in time (or simply not care if he did) and would have run him over. "Damn, its getting more dangerous out here by the minute..." Richie gasped as his breathing slowly returned to normal. "I can't just keep going on like this..."

Suddenly, a fresh choir of moans and roars began closing in, no doubt drawn in by the sound of the speeding van...
