Experimental brain transplant surgery saves either your life, or someone very close.
This choice: Your mother, Jennifer Connors.  •  Go Back...
Chapter #3

Your mother, Jennifer Connors.

"...Your mother."

The reveal of your mother's name hit you like a ton of bricks. Feeling instantly like you were going to be sick. Randall's brain being inside your mother's body meaning only one thing; that she was dead. Your mom was dead.

"No... Please no!" You whimpered. Not wanting this to be true.

"We're so sorry, Tim. We really are," the kindly old doctor continued. "We wish it could have been some other way, but the impact of the crash caused her to have an aneurysm, leaving her completely brain dead. There was simply nothing we could do. If it wasn't for Dr. Kerry using her as a donor body then Randall would have gone the same way."

You couldn't contain yourself anymore. Breaking down in tears in front of them both. The impact of this news being too devastating and horrible to take.

Thankfully, the two doctors gave you a few minutes. Assuring you that in death she had also given life. It being "what she would have wanted."

"So... So Randall is now in her body?" you finally sniffled. Looking back up at them again. "He's my mom?" It being almost impossible to imagine your goofy, sex obsessed best friend of the last 13 years was now the woman who'd given birth to you.

"He is," Dr. Kerry nodded. "Or at least a portion of his brain is. The cerebrum, which controls higher brain functions such as memories and what not. Essentially what makes up a human beings personality." Informing you then that, "Other than the aneurysm, your mother's body was almost completely unharmed during the crash. The perfect donor for your friend. We just had to take the opportunity while we could. An hour longer and Randall would be gone now too."

"It's not ideal certainly," Saunders agreed, "but we did save his life. You do understand that don't you?"

"Yeah. I guess," you told him. As messed up as it was. If it really was the only way they could possibly save your best friend's life, then you supposed you could sort of understand. As painful and as traumatic as it was, they were both just trying to do the right thing.

"Only..."

Only what? You thought. Sensing some sort of catch coming by the unease that had now began creeping its way into his voice. Looking rather uncomfortable now as he continued.

"Well, as I said before, the procedure wasn't officially sanctioned by either the hospital or the medical board. What we did here today wasn't strictly legal." You didn't doubt this fact at all. Brain transplantation not really seeming like something that would be. "More importantly than that, if anyone else found out about it, about your friend... Well, I'm sure you can imagine the media coverage it would receive. The press would hound Randall until the day he dies. You too. This might be a scientific breakthrough and the right thing to do given the circumstances, but I'm not entirely sure others will see it that way."

"That is why we're going to have to keep this a secret, Tim," Kerry told you. "For your sake and for Randall's. Meaning that as far as everyone else is concerned Randall is your mother now. He died today, not her."

You didn't know whether to laugh or cry at this. It being too preposterous an idea to even properly contemplate. The two doctors being absolutely out of their mind if they thought anyone would agree to this. Finding out however, from Dr. Saunders that, "His parents already agreed it's for the best, and now we need you to do the same", before you'd even had a proper chance to react.

"You've got to be kidding me?" you said. This news completely blowing your mind. His dad and Alice, the ultra religious God botherer had actually agreed to this? This making even less sense, as you questioned them then, "How the hell am I supposed to do that?"

"I know it will be difficult and that this is a lot to take in right now, but it'll only be in public," Saunders said. "We'll all still know the truth, and you'll be handsomely rewarded for your sacrifice."

"No way," you shook your head. "No way is this happening!" It very much appearing like some bad dream. Being devastated enough as it was without being told that your best friend was essentially going to have to take over your mother's identity. Finding yourself once again bursting into tears as the gray haired doctor did his best to comfort you. Telling you that it would all alright and that you just needed to be strong. To be there for your friend, who was definitely going to need you now. The two of you having been as thick as thieves, and basically lived out of each others pockets since before you'd even started kindergarten. Randall's mom, his real mom, having met yours and become friends at a baby and toddler group, and the two of you had immediately done the same. Thinking of him as more of a brother sometimes than friend. How then where you meant to cope now, seeing him like that... as your mom? An incredibly kind, caring and compassionate woman, who had always been there when you needed her, and never took shit from anyone. How?
