Chapter #3

Xander the Dragon

by: Thoughtful Writer Author IconMail Icon
Xander climbed the mountain feeling hot and tired. Xander, a blue wingless dragon, decided to go on a journey alone, which was probably a bad idea. But he heard rumors of a great treasure on this mountain and he couldn’t pass by on an opportunity that could make him rich, especially in his world. His world was a magical and dangerous one. He had no means of defending himself if he ever came across any danger. He didn’t have an ounce of muscle on his scaly body. He didn’t even have wings. Xander always found it ironic because dragons were one of the strongest beings in the world and he had neither muscle or wings. Maybe if he gets the treasure, he can find someone with magic powers and who can make him much, much bigger, and pay them then.

Hey, he didn't have much to lose. Literally. He only had a small ax-like weapon, which he could barely lift, a few pieces of gold he scrounged up, the few pieces of clothing (Armor plates that only covered his chest and forearms, and an underwear-like loincloth). He left for his trip to what was known as Acrid Mountain. Properly named because of the hot lava that swelters inside it. He was told no one has ever set foot to the top. When he said he would scour the mountain, he received nothing but laughs and hurtful comments. He didn't care, least not for them anyways, he just wished he could be big and strong, so he could show them who's boss. He had thoughts of going back down once or twice, but he already got this far. Wasn't going to be that long until he reaches the top of the mountain. He had to press on.

The next part Xander came across was a path on the side of the mountain that was broken apart. It was a pretty long gap for him to jump over. Seems the only way he could get across was by jumping for a long tree branch that hung in the middle. He takes a deep breath, even though his heart was pumping awfully fast. "Well...here goes nothing.", he gulps. The dragon takes a couple steps back, and then makes a run for it. He leaps for it the moment his foot touches the edge of the cliff and manages to reach for the lone-growing branch. He ends up swinging around the branch a few more times than he expected, but finally swings himself up and about. While in motion, he sees the great a looong way down, and then realizes he wasn't going to reach the other side. In a split second, he pulls out his weapon and quickly uses it like an extra-long arm to reach the other side of the cliff. "Oh goodness...", he sweats.

He manages to pick himself up, his whole body sweating after his crazy feat. "That...was close..." Xander continued climbing the mountain. As he got closer to the peak, the hotter he got. He wiped the sweat off his scales and huffed a few breaths. After what felt forever, Xander finally arrived to the top of the mountain only to be disappointed.

As Xander looked around, he only saw a pool of bubbling lava, no treasure, no items, not even a monster. There was nothing. Xander couldn't help but feel mad making smoke come out of his nostrils. "I can't believe it! I came all this way to find nothing! How can this be happening?! Here I am trying to prove myself, only to find absolutely nothing!" Xander kicked a rock to the side. Suddenly the piece of cliff he was standing began to crumble. Before Xander could even think, the cliff gave away into the lava along with him. Xander wished he had wings until he met what appeared to be his fiery demise.
