Chapter #3

Burt the bear

by: Thoughtful Writer Author IconMail Icon
It was a sunny day. The sunlight shines down a large patch of forest trees, their leaves fluttering in the breeze. Lying against one of the trees was a brown-furred bear, wearing a red lumberjack shirt, blue pants, and brown shoes. He was just lounging about, minding his own business. Until someone drops a small stack of logs right beside him, the thumping sounds making his body jump in response, "Hey! I was napping!"

A rather dark-brown-furred, studly deer in matching clothing (except with a brown shirt), was the perpetrator. "Come on Burton, it's time to get some work done."

The tired bear wasn't too buff himself. In fact he seems a little more on the heavyset side. He just turns and faces away from his supervisor, "Mm... Anthony, do I have to?"

"Yes! You want that college credit, you gotta push your own weight arond here." Anthony sighs. "You've only been here a day. Why would you even sign up for a extra credit course like this?"

Burt pouts, "I didn't! That's the thing."

The deer crosses his rather thick arms, "Well, if you had been paying more attention in class, you would have paid more attention at what you were actually signing up for beforehand."

The bear does his best to pick himself up, "Is it too late to sign up for something else?"

"No.", the deer replies. "But it's required that at least one student signs up for every course. And you're the only one here, so you're outta luck." Anthony picks up two axes, holding one for his student, "Now come on." Burt let out a loud sigh as he dusted off the dirt from his pants and the back of his shirt before reluctantly grabbing the axe.

"man this isn't fair..." The deer gave a small snort as he set the axe he was holding over his shoulder and began walking towards a large copse of unchopped trees with Burt following behind.

"Life isn't fair. Better get used to it" Burt almost let out a deep grumble of complaints under his breath, but his bit his lip and simply held it in. It was no used trying to fight something out of his hands. Unless another student picked that course there was no way he could leave. He was stuck and no matter how much it sucked, this is what he was stuck in until he got his college credit.

More than an hour later Burt was barely able to remain upright. His upper body was practically drenched in sweat as he took one last swing as the tree he was working on fell with a thunderous clatter and he let out a deep sigh of relief. Six trees cut, down not bad at all. As he set the axe down he heard a laugh behind him and he slowly turned around.

"Six trees only? If you want that college credit you need to work much harder. I won't even consider this day finished until you chop down at least another four or more." Burt almost snarled at the smug looking deer behind him as he tried to stretch, but winced at the aching sting of his overstretched muscles. Another four? what was he? superman? He couldn't even lift that axe again, let alone chop down another four trees.

"F-Four? are you crazy?" As Burt lifted his head up to look Anthony in the eyes, who only had an almost taunting smile on his face as he shook it head.

"No I'm trying to whip your lazy butt into shape and really make you sweat for that colege credit. And if you start complaining I'm going to make you cut another five on top of the four you still have to do." Burt sucked in a breath to let loose a very hateful retort at him, but he squelched it down and swallowed his anger.

"Can.. I at least.. take a break? I am about to collapse from exhaustion." Anthony let out an exhasperated sigh before he reluctantly nodded his head.

"Fine, take your break, but you only get a forty minute break. For every minute you are late getting back to work I am going to tack on another tree for you to cut down, so I suggest you spend your break wisely and get back here as soon as you can." Burt had to dig his claws into the palm of his paw not to snarl at Anthony before he gave a small nod.

Burt walked in aches all over his chest and arms. He never exercised that intense before. He walked to the edge of a river too tired to admire the rushing water. Burt was tired of feeling weak all the time, tired of being heavy, and tired of people like Anthony picking on him. Burt wanted it all to stop but felt powerless to change anything about his life.

Burt turned to his left and noticed a small cave peeping out on the side of a hill. He found the cave intriguing. Somehow, Burt felt like he could relate to the darkness inside the cave by being alone and isolating himself from the world around him. Out of curiosity, Burt walked into the cave to see what he could find. Besides, he had another half-hour in his break.

Burt could feel the dampness and humidity in the air of the cave. He even heard the occasional dripping of water from a random stalagtite. The darkness cleared with sunlight coming from a random hole above him. In the light, Burt noticed capped yellow mushroom with red spots. There were dozens of them scattered over the cave ground and walls. Burt never saw mushrooms like these before. He picked one up from the ground to observe it. His stomach then rumbled. Burt was starving after the intense workout. Burt knew eating random things in nature wasn't a good idea but after the day that he had he didn't care. The bear popped the mushroom in his mouth, chewed, and swallowed. The rumbling in the bear stomach ceased but Burt began to feel a little strange. He didn't know why.
