Jane's Freakout

Note: Pronouns fitting a character’s biological form will be used, no matter what they feel on the inside. So, if a guy turns into a girl, I will use “her”. Also, all of the characters are 15 years old.
“Oh, hey, Jane.” Brandon said in her new, higher-pitched voice as he got outside and walked past the girl.
Jane felt a peculiar feeling of familiarity. She had never heard this voice before, yet some intuition was telling her she knew it somehow. At first, she assumed it was another girl who happened to know her name, so she turned to see who the stranger was.
She was shocked to see the back of someone who was wearing the same clothes she was and whose hair looked identical to hers.
“Wha?” the real Jane sputtered before she felt a tap on her back.
Startled, she whirled around to see her friend Sarah, who warned her to be quiet and led her to the garage. Her brother Matt was also standing there and looked very anxious.
“All right, what the hell is happening?!” Jane exclaimed. “Why is there someone who looks like me outside?”
“OK, OK.” Sarah sighed. “Me and Matt saw Brandon use some kind of magic ring he took from one of our bins. I think something was...alive in there. Because he acted like something in his head was talking to him about “familiars” or whatever.“
“I told Sarah that things could get dangerous if you interacted with Brandon’s new body.” Matt explained. “It might cause an unnecessary freakout. Also, Brandon left the ring behind. I’m going to try it on myself.”
“What?!” Jane exclaimed. “Matt, that could be dangerous!”
“I have to test if the ring’s effects can be undone. It might cause some unnecessary conflict if I explained to Brandon what was happening. And I’m not letting you put yourself in danger by changing. So, that only leaves me. I have to test the extent of any personality changes and if any superpowers transfer over if I wish to turn into a fictional character. I have a hunch anyone who sees the changes are made aware of them. I think that’s why Sarah and I noticed the changes, and Brandon didn’t. So, I’ll look into a mirror when I change.”
