Your mother returns to the stove. You take a step back expectantly, giving her plenty of room for any range of surprised reactions. She looks down at the food, confused.
"What's this?" She asks you. "What did you do? This isn't stew...." She frowns deeply and tastes it. "No... this is ... chilly." She says after smacking her lips demonstratingly.
You try to act surprised. "Chilly? That's my favourite." You grin. Your mother just looks at you, uncomprehending. "Yeah. But how did you...?" She trails off, unsure what to ask. Then her face breaks into a conspiratory grin. "Ooh, wait... I get it. You're practicing your magic tricks again, right? Nice one, James. Where did you put the stew?" You just shrug, grinning stupidly. "I dunno, mom. Did you check under the stove?"
She just sighs "Whatever, James. I'd better not find a rotting pan of stew somewhere in a few weeks." and continues stirring.
