Chapter #8
you and father go up to speak with her
by: Unknown
"Dad," you only say Dad to your father when you really want his attention, "this is a bad idea."
"So is changing you into a woman." He grabs his staff and you try to take it from him. He pulls away. part of you gets angry that he's treating you like a child. You take a deep breath. Father can be stubborn.
"Then let me handle it."
"You--" he says incredulously. "Surely I should do the talking."
"You're the one who sent me to deal with her the first time. Who has been working for you to get better."
"Child, be silent."
How dare he refer to me as child, I'm a grown woman. You grab your cloak and together you head to the river and the witches' home. You don't speak the whole time, but you mutter how you should have just stolen the herb how this would never have happened.
You refrain from mentioning images of the angry witch descending on your hovel.
She is there waiting for you.
"You're here early child."
"My father wants to talk to you," you say neutrally.
"Of course he does, I want to talk to him as well." That puts shiver up your spine.
"Uhh, Father, this the Witch of the River (you realize she's never told you her name). Father, this is the witch." You take a step back. She offers him her hand with more courtesy than she's shown you. He ignores it.
"I want to say Jack is doing a wonderful job for me, but she's going home exhausted. I want her to stay with me from now on."
"You turned her into a girl and she's now less valuble around the farm."
"So you don't object to her living with me."
"Of course I object, and I want you to turn him back into his proper shape. We're done working for you."
"Jack, do you want to be turned into a boy."
"No, of course not," you say automatically. The idea of being magically transformed bothers you and you wouldn't want for it to happen again.
"See, she doesn't want to be changed back. She's my maid, and I need full time. I'm also worried about her health, she shouldn't be overworked.
"Then release her. I need him to pay my tithes. Besides, what will the neighbors think?"
She shrugs and takes a step back. "Do you have anything more to say?"
"I don't want to use my staff on an old lady, but----"
"Quit your barking." The witch shouts and you feel the power behind her words. Where your dad was standing a moment ago is a dog, a Collie. She puts her hand down and the dog smells. A moment later she's petting your father like a puppy. Come on, there's a good dog. She looks up at you.
"Lets go inside and discuss, your employment under the changed circumstances."
