Chapter #3

Apologetic Appetite

    by: WritersBlockhead Author IconMail Icon
It was a lovely morning in the lush, green parks of Paris, France. The sun is shining, flowers are dying, the birds are fleeing, the-wait, what?

Ah yes, if it isn’t Pepé Le Pew, walking into the scene holding hands with none other than his usual target of affection, Penelope. Only this time, she is holding his too instead of having her’s unwillingly locked under Pepé’s grip, nor does she try to pry her fingers from it and escape, indicating she’s finally reached a truce with him

“Ah, is it not a lovely day for a romantic morning stroll with ma delicious, little cake of ze cheese?” Pepé said to Penelope.

“Yes...I suppose so...” replied Penelope. Pepé has never been the clearest reader of Penelope’s feelings, but after she got along with him, he’s started becoming somewhat more attentive towards her.

“Is something bothering you, baby?” he said to her in a concerned tone. Penelope looked at him with a nervous expression. “It’s fine, ah just...”

Penelope paused before finishing her sentence, remembering the previous, numerous times she’s attempted to flee from Pepé. She knew her reasons were justified though, but this was moreso referring to the ones centering Pepé’s intrusiveness rather than his stench, since she realized she was letting her nose do most of the judging in that case. Pepé had slowly started to become less physical with his affection, giving Penelope a gradual but eventual change of heart of her opinion towards him. But she’s afraid if she still continued to let her olfactory paranoia get the best of her, Pepé wouldn’t have gained her trust regardless and she’d have stayed a permanent one-sided rival towards him. Her ears and whiskers lowering as she descended from anxiety to sadness contemplating such a dark scenario.

Even if she hadn’t finished her sentence, Pepé still knew what was going on. Not just because he can read her relatively better now, but because she’s admitted having the same thought shortly after her acceptance towards Pepé a few days ago. “Hey, do not worry, madame” he told her warmly as he put his hand on her shoulder. “It is ze past, no? Just be happy we have both learned to understand each other better over time”.

“I know” she replied, already aware of their mutual understanding. “I just...don’t like thinking about how stubborn I would’ve been if I was still zat scared of your stench. I would not have cared in ze slightest about how much you’ve improved for moi, and would continue to act like I still have a reason to run away. Which means zis relationship would not have happened between us and I...I...”

She began to tear up, too emotional to get herself to finish her sentence. Pepé promptly attempted to comfort her, wiping away her tears. “Now now, mon cherie. Zere is no need for ze waterworks. For zat has not happened, yes? And here we are, togezzér at last”. Pepé cheered, raising his arms in joy.

Penelope looked at Pepé, silently agreeing, but maintaining a sorrowful expression. Pepé lowered his arms, appearing disquieted at her lingering misery.

He looks around for a way to console his crestfallen kitty cherie. He finds a nearby hotdog vendor, and decides to buy one for her. He walks over to the stand, the vendor adding some ketchup to his customer’s order.

“Excusez-moi, monsieur?” he asks the vendor. “One-

But before he could finish his sentence, both the vendor and customer fled from his presence.

“...hotdog” he finishes.

Though, the customer’s order remained suspended in mid-air, and Pepé extended his hand to catch it in time.

Pepé stood for a while, doubting whether giving Penelope this hotdog would be considered stealing. But then, he turns to the viewers and shrugs, remarking “It is not stealing if ze customer’s already payed for it, yes?”

Pepé walked over to Penelope, hotdog in hand. “Will a delicious taco of ze sausage help clear ze butterflies of bitterness from your belly?”

“Well, I suppose” she replied, slightly uplifted by Pepé’s offering.

“Mmmm!” Penelope said, caught off guard by the eruption of umami within her mouth as she chewed the sauce-covered sausage. “Are you feeling better now, baby?” Pepé said, hoping he assuaged her previous glumness. “Yes, I guess I am” she responded. “Good, anything to satisfy my precious little peanut of ze brittle”. he replied flatteringly.

Finishing off her snack, Penelope’s managed to get a few smudges of sauce around her lips in the process. “Oh, let me get zat for you, cherie” Pepé said, pulling out a handkerchief and wiping her lips. “Oh. Merci, darling” Penelope thanked him for his courtesy. “No problem, baby doll” Pepé replied.

Pepé’s deed of reassurance has genuinely touched Penelope, taking her mind off the anxiety of visualizing the preclusion of their relationship. And so, she decides to use his generosity to make up for her biased mindset towards him in the past by having him feed her for every meal they have together.

——————————

Penelope checked her watch and at noon sharp, insisted that Pepé took her to a nice restaurant to eat. Pepé was surprised by her abrupt decision, but found it touching nonetheless. She also recommended he painted his tail to keep his stench and reputation at bay to avoid any complications during lunch. Like not making it happen.

After doing so, they both ordered a plate of filet. As Pepé finishes his, he is puzzled at how untouched Penelope’s plate is. “Are you not hungry, dear?” he said, worried about her seemingly lost appetite. “Oh, I am plenty famished. But ah was wondering if...you would do ze honors of feeding moi” she replied. “Ohohoho~ Feeding your lover is quite ze romantic move, is it not~?” Pepé remarked, greatly appreciating her proposal. He picked up her fork and knife and cut a piece from her steak. “Ah~” he audibly cued her to follow. She opened her mouth, consuming the morsel offered. “Oh, zat is trés délicieuse!” she cried, savoring the fried delicacy. “Especially when YOU offer it to moi~” she said seductively, followed by a giggle. Pepé felt a rush of pride at her flirty response. “Oh, you must really like zis, no? Well, how about ah feed you for every meal we have togezzér?”

Penelope’s eyes brightened and ears perked at his statement. “Ah...ah would be delighted” she said, pleasantly surprised by his very convenient request. “Awww, if it pleases my merveilleuse petite amie “ Pepé said, flattering his bicolored belle. He picked her plate clean, aside from a few bones. As Garçon Daffy came to pick up her plate, she asked for another round, to which he complied and went to inform the chef, also hoping this would charge extra for his payday. “My my, you are awfully hungry today, madame” Pepé said. “Oh, it’s nothing. I just happen to have room for anozzér plate.” Penelope replied, patting her belly.

From here on out, Pepé has fed Penelope for every meal they had together, though with Penelope insisting he stops when she is just nearly full. This gourmandise exchange went on for weeks, and has given Penelope some inevitable poundage. Her figure has only slightly softened though, apart from the considerable bulge in her belly. This may have concerned her, but she just figured she’d burn it off once she got time. However, she assumes if Pepé noticed, he may start blaming himself and stop feeding her. Fortunately, his usual state of oblivion has made it easy to change the subject once he started suspecting any changes.
