Chapter #7No escape by: Unknown You take a deep breathe. "I'm really sorry Katy but I can't. I agree with all your saying, I really do like cheerleading and I want to help out but having to act and dress like a girl everyday to do it. I just couldn't, I'm really very sorry."
Katy visibly slumps at this, you can see the disappointment in her eyes. "Oh okay, I understand. Its your choice after all, I guess we won't have a cheer squad this year after all. No hard feelings." She turns and trudges off to the changing rooms. "Oh and you can keep the uniform, we won't need it and besides you look cute in it." She says over her shoulder.
You feel terrible, the worst you have felt in your life. Not only are you denying yourself something you really enjoy but also denying it others. You too head for the boy's changing room and change, almost reluctantly back into your normal clothes. You put the uniform in your bag as a keepsake and head home.
"Mom, I'm home" you yell as you enter your house. You fling your bag next to the door and take off your shoes, glad you can relax after the strenuous training.
"Great timing Adam, dinners on the table." you here your mom's voice come from the kitchen. You walk on though to the dinning room and see your two sisters already at the table.
Your older sister Erin greets you with her traditional "Sup dork."
While your year younger sister Lilly opts for a more pleasant "Hey Adam."
You take your seat next to Lilly without saying anything and wait for your mom. Its not long before she joins you and you all dig into your food. Talk over dinner is mostly about Lilly's upcoming hockey game and also features another one of Erin's classic feminist rants. Just one year of doing sociology and gender studies and she thinks she knows it all. You don't contribute much, only offering the occasional "uh huh" or "okay" as your mind is still on the cheer team. The guilt you feel is almost unbearable but thinking of living in girl's clothes helps it dissipate a little. At the end of dinner you offer to clear the table and help with the washing, perhaps to alleviate some of the guilt. Lilly washes while you wipe and Erin just lounges at the kitchen table on her phone. Just as you are drying a plate the phone rings and your mom answers.
"Hello, well hi principle Granger, how can I help you?" your ears prick up at this and so do Lilly's and Erin's. All production in washing up comes to a standstill. "I see, well that's just terrible, the cheerleaders at the sports games always livened things up." your mom continues.
Lilly gets back to washing. "Granger probably wants donations." she says relived.
You don't budge, still holding a plate in your hand, ears straining to hear more of the conversation. And then came the words every child dreads to hear their parent say. "Oh he did, did he?" you mom says. Erin and Lilly gaze at you grinning.
"Busted dweeb." Erin says triumphantly.
You grimace wondering what you did wrong and how could the cheer squad be involved.
"Okay, okay, its a little unorthodox but I can see the merits to it and I think it will be the best for him if what your saying about the people he hangs out with is true and if it helps the teams in the process, I see no reason why not. You have my full support principle Granger." A pause ensues and Erin and Lilly are both falling about with laughter silently. You remain still, filled with dread, hoping against hope what is happening is not what you think is happening.
"What's that?" your mom continues. "Ms. Wilkes thinks it would be good for Erin too? That's great, I'm sure Erin will be delighted you said that and that offer is very generous." Erin stops laughing and looks confused now. Ms. Wilkes is Erin's sociology and gender studies teacher. "Okay okay, let her know we will start immediately and she can come and help tomorrow. Aren't we lucky we have the weekend eh?" your mom laughs. "Okay bye principle Granger and thank you." The phone goes down.
Immediately all you Erin and Lilly get back to work looking busy as possible. Your mom walks in with an odd expression on her face, something that can only be described as a mixture of pride and mild disappointment. "That was your principle on the phone as I'm sure you all know. She had some interesting things to tell me and put forward a few dramatic changes that I whole wholeheartedly support." She pauses to collect her thoughts. "She tells me that you tried out for the cheer squad today Adam." Lilly stifles an amused snort and your mom scowls at her and all signs of her mirth disappear. "She tells me that you refused to join the team despite knowing that it was short on numbers which is shameful even if you were signed up as a joke." She says scoldingly and you look down at the floor. "However" her tone changes to pride, "she also told me that from watching you from her office window, that you were one of, if not the best cheerleader she has ever seen and being that good without prior practice is incredible. Apparently she was amazed that you were a boy. This is why you turning it down was so inconceivable."
You find your voice now. "But mom they wanted me to go to school as a girl." Erin, stiffens at this.
"I know. Principle Granger told me about Katy's plan and approves of it. Apparently your new so-called friends are not the A-students that you would have me believe them to be. I'm told they're slackers, troublemakers and smokers." Your mom's becomes menacing "If I find out that you so much as touched a cigarette young man you'll be in more trouble than you ever thought possible."
"I've never smoked" you say panicked.
"But its a just a matter of time before you do hanging around with those scruffs which is why I think Katy's idea is best for you." Your jaw drops. "It lets you have a new start away from bad influences which will help your school work, it will let the girls on the cheer squad have a team and from what I'm told you rather enjoy cheerleading too." Lilly looks like she is about to laugh again but manages to hold firm. "So from this day on, your going to live as though you are my middle daughter, not just at school and in cheerleading but full time."
"What!? How can you do this?" you exclaim, not believing what you just heard.
"Quite easily after being told all the advantages, this will be best for you."
"But but" you stutter but your mom ignores you.
Erin speaks up now. "I agree completely with your decision mom its just what he needs." you glare at her "but where do I come into this? I heard you mention me on the phone."
"Ah I almost forgot the other benefit of this arrangement. Ms. Wilkes has expressed that she is extremely pleased with your progress and called you a perfect example of a modern, assertive and independent young woman..." Erin smiles proudly at this. "and she tells me that Adam's change would be help her research in understanding reversing gender roles in society and hopes that you would like to document some results and also help guide his transformation in return for a recommendation for a scholarship to any Ivy league university of your choice, apparently she has some pull with the acceptance offices."
Erin almost leaps out of her seat. "Yes I'll do it" she shouts happily.
"Good well its settled then. Adam, for the rest of your time at high school, you will go as a girl. Every aspect of your life will now be that of a girl's and I think we better start as we mean to go on by making you look more presentable for our shopping trip tomorrow."
"Shopping trip? Why?" is all you can muster. You are in shock, you must be dreading, something like this can't be real.
"Well we can't have you wearing any of your sister's clothes for the next couple of years, it wouldn't be fair to them, besides both their clothes would be too big for you." She's right there. Erin is quite tall at 5 ft 10 and Lilly is 5ft 8 but built much bigger than you from hockey practice and exercise. "So Lilly, would you mind finishing the dishes dear while your sister and I make your new sister look more appropriate?"
