Rena the Striped

    by: Unknown
Long ago in the land of Torim, there existed fifty terrible beasts known as the Malabestia, monstrous beings of great evil, who knew no better pleasure than terrorizing the mortal races of the world. For untold years they ravaged the land, until finally, the Grand Council of Mages banished them to an empty dimension for all time. A millenium passed, and the Malabestia faded from all memory, except those of the council, who from that point forward passed the knowledge of the Malabestia and their imprisonment on to their successors, so that if they would ever escape, the council could once again send them back into oblivion.

But alas, as the centuries passed, the knowledge of the spell that was used banish the Malabestia was lost. So now, if they were to be released, the only hope to save the world from their plight, was for someone to do the impossible. Someone would have to destroy them.

But no ordinary weapon could harm the Malabestia. In order to slay them, one would need an exceptionally powerful enchanted weapon, not to mention the one wielding it would have to be extremely powerful themself. Someone like the legendary sorceress, Rena the Striped.

Raised since childhood in the arcane arts, Rena quickly discovered she had an exceptional talent for magic, and was always looking to increase her already extraordinary powers. She was a member of the race known as the Kath, humanoid cats of various breeds. She was famous throughout the land, not only because of her power, but because of her massive ego.

Ever since Rena her academy days, Rena had developed quite the superiority complex, believing herself to be the most powerful sorceress in the world, and while that may not have been far that from the truth, the Council, as well as her fellow mages, grew more and more fed up with her arrogance by the day.

One day, as she was soaking in her personal hot springs, a phoenix swooped down from the sky, with a piece of parchment clutched in it's beak. Rena knew the phoenix had been sent by the Grand Council of Mages, those old geezers had always communicated by way of mystic birds. Rena never understood why, then again, she didn't really care for anything the council did. She considered them all to be foolish old men, spending all day in their tower on their gilded thrones, debating over such petty matters as whether they should revoke the entrance fee for the Arcane Academy.

Rena set the scroll aside as she stood up and exited the spring. She used to have such a scrawny figure, but thanks to a little alteration spell, she now had a sizable bust, as well as an admittedly perky rear. With a snap of her fingers, her body instantly dried, and her fur was nice and smooth against her skin.

She noticed the phoenix was still there, seemingly staring at her nude self. Rena scowled. "Why don't you carve a statue? It'll last longer." She aimed two fingers at the bird, and a bolt of lightning shot from her hand, striking the ground directly next to the phoenix. It flew off with an angry squawk, as Rena gave a light smirk. After dressing herself in her usual attire, a red cloak and hood with a emerald green tunic, Rena sat on a nearby rock as she opened the scroll and read it.

Rena the Striped,

You are cordially summoned to the Tower of the Grand Council, to discuss a most urgent matter. We feel you are the only one qualified to handle this dilemma, and urge you to come to the city of Tytus post haste. Complete the task we bestow upon you, and your reward shall include half of the gold in our vaults, the Heart of Torim ruby, and the Gauntlet of Menomitus. Please come at once the safety of the world depends on it.

High Wizard Borus

Rena grinned. So, those old fools we're willing to give her their greatest treasures, in exchange for completing a measly task? This would be the easiest score of her life! No matter what their little assignment was, it would no doubt simple for someone of her power. She had made her living by saving entire cities from natural disasters, monsters, and other such things, but only at a great price, usually in the form of gold or a powerful magical artifact.

Picking up her staff, Rena focused her mind on the city of Tytus, the capitol of Torim, and with a bright flash of light, she appeared outside the entrance to the Council Tower. the tower itself was easily the tallest structure in the city, if not all of Torim, and symbolized the status and power of the Council itself. They didn't govern the land, but acted as advisors to the emperor, as well as providing various services to the public.

Rena entered the gates, past the sentry golems that guarded the entrance, and stepped onto the stone disk with mystical symbols carved into it. Rena banged bottom of her staff three times on the disk, which began to glow with a bright purple light. In an instant, Rena was was standing in the center of the Council chamber, facing the seven council members as they sat on their thrones. They all wore dark blue robes, and had long white hair and beards, Rena always wondered if it would kill them to let a woman on the council, not that she would be interested in the job, she had much better things to do.

"Ah, Rena the Striped. Glad you could make it." Said Borus, the head of the council. He sat in the center chair, with three other council members on either side of him. "Whatever. This had better be worth my time, old man." Rena replied. Borus put on a slight scowl as he continued, this was not the first time they had commissioned Rena for a task, and he and the rest of the council have had just about enough of Rena's arrogance and disrespect. "I promise you, complete this task, and we shall make it worth your time. You must hunt down and slay the Malabestia."

Rena arched an eyebrow. " I thought they were dead already." "Not dead, just banished from this plane by the original Council." Said Borus "We don't know how, but they have escaped their perdition, and are running amok throughout the land. Only an extremely powerful artifact can destroy the Malabestia, and so we present you with this."

Borus clapped his hands together, and a magnificent sword materialized in mid air in front of Rena, who gasped in amazement. "Is that..." Borus nodded "Yes, the Sword of Souls." Rena set her staff on the floor, and grasped the sword, drawing it frown it's scabbard. It's blade was forged of pure gold, and a silver handle with a large ruby in the center.

"This blade will absorb the souls of those it slays." Borus continued, "It will also grow in power with each soul absorbed. After you've slain all fifty of the Malabestia, you are to return the sword to us. We also ppresent you with this enchanted feather." Borus produced a white feather from his leave, and it levitated over to Rena. "It will point you in the direction of the nearest Malabestia, and will glow once you have found it. And finally, to help you succeed in your quest, we will place a spell on you that will resurrect you right here, should you die on your journey."

Rena scoffed. "Oh please, I don't need your help. I will slay these petty beasts on the first try, without the aid of feeble old fools." Taking the sword and feather, Rena prepared to leave, but she had already crossed the line. There was a noise like thunder as Rena's body was suddenly paralyzed and Borus' voice boomed out.

"RENA! YOU HAVE DISRESPECTED THIS COUNCIL FOR THE LAST TIME! YOU ARE VAIN, ARROGANT, GREEDY, AND AN ALL AROUND PAIN IN THE ASS!"

There was a bright flash of light, and Rena could move again. "What just happened?" All seven council members looked down at her with a sneer as Borus answered "We have had it with your disrespect towards this council, so we have decided to teach you a lesson in humility. We have placed our spell of immortality on you, but each time you are resurrected, you will gain more and more body weight."

"WHAT!?" WHY WOULD YOU MAKE A SPELL LIKE THAT!?"

"Simple. You are known for three things, your magical prowess, your immeasurable ego, and your lovely figure. By placing this spell on you, we hope to remove the latter two from the equation. In fact, let's make a little wager, hmm? If you complete your quest without dying once, you may keep the Sword of Souls."

At first Rena was furious, how dare they do this to her! But then she remembered, she was Rena the Striped! She would destroy the Malabestia without even trying, curse or no curse! "Fine, old man, you have a deal." With that said, she slammed her staff end on the floor, and teleported back to the gates. After Rena had gone, the council members all burst out laughing.

And so Rena's quest begins, but where will it take her first?
