It had been like any other Thursday. One long day of school in the week proceeding a nice one week vacation. The classes were a drag, though you were pretty sure you aced the math test. The only thing even worse than the school day was the pouring, pelting rain. What great luck it had been when your bus was the only bus to get a flat tire halfway out of the paring lot. Even worse: construction. The normal route to your home was completely blocked off for a bit, and today, the street was fludded. Standing at the intersection, there really only was one way left home and that was through the forest that seemed to encompass your town. The trees had all but started to turn into the auburn, yellow and reds that followed fall, and though they were pretty, it was still eary when they backdrop was a dark, damp gray sky.
For the first ten minutes, you were bored out of your mind, kicking leaves up here and there, the occasional log you had to hop over, just brain dead things to do before you could get back to your street. A tree branch snapped in front of you, the wind picked up and not three feet away did a tree split in two from a sudden lightning bolt. Your legs acted before your brain and into a steady sprint you ran. Past cracking cedars and oaks, the trees were swaying back and forth, the ground overflowing with water and the mud becoming thicker and nastier as seconds went by. As if on cue, you gaze into a small over hang from a large boulder, big enough to hide you and shelter yourself from the storm.
With one scrapping slide, you make it just in time for a large tree to topple over from the high winds, narrowly avoiding you. You let the breath you've been holding out. Gasping, you listen as the wind and rain beat heartlessly at the forest, any chances of you getting back to your house would have to include you making a mad dash fro it. After crouching for a bit, and the rain not letting up, you sit down. "What the?" Something small and hard had poked your behind as you were sitting. You look back to see a small white stone, perfectly white, with a few grey speckles here and there. It was too perfectly shaped to be any kind of regular rock, to smooth and rounded to be any stone, it certainly had to be something else. You had a gut feeling that it was something else, which you already knew what.
This was an egg.
Pure, white, warm and vibrant, it was some beasts egg, and not a normal beast, something bigger if it was this size. Crouched down, the egg was almost as tall as your torso, but standing up, you would definately be able to carry it. Although, what would the implacations be. One, whatever, or who ever egg this was, they'd be back to take it, two you didn't need something big and mean chasing after you and three-
*CRRRRACK*
The rock above you began to shift. Downwards. Onto you. There was no time to think anymore, it would be better to save the both of you than to save yourself. Grabbing the more than heavy egg, you bolted out of the rock underhang and leaped into safety. The several large rock faces smashed against each other.
You place the egg into your backpack and trot home, this was no time to worry about the weather. Finally braking out of a heavy shrubbery laiden wall, you see the back of some of the houses on your street. It was a small road wit hno outlet that led into vast forested areas, some you hadn't explored yet. Noticing your parents cars weren't home, you unlock the door and quickly rush into your room, the door slamming behind you. Quickly taking the egg out, you set it down on a bean bag chair you had. Now you were thinking it wasn't such a good idea to take it.
"Shoot, what whatever it is's mother comes looking for it, it track my scent an then come for the egg and," pacing back and forth, you bite your lip, "What if I accidently broke somehow, or it won't hatch." Sitting down you stare at the egg, the dim light coming from the outside flooding into your room. The egg seemed to glow, it wasn't eery but almost calming. "What if... what if its really not-" You kneel close to the egg and very gently and slowly put your ear against it. There was no sound. You sighed with relief, happy that-
Thu-Thump
It was a heart beat, you double back and stare in amazement, that's when the front door opens and you hear your dad come in. Thinking fast you quickly hide it in your closet, a small blanket wrapped around it to keep it warm. Then the evening plays out as normal, parents ask you your day, 'was fine' you eat dinner, do homework and then you're finished, waiting for tomorrow. Except, the egg is still on your mind. Getting into your night gown, you stare at the closet and shake your head "Maybe I'm going crazy, it'll be gone in the morning, yeah that's it." You slip into the covers and doze off to sleep.
That night you have the weirdest, most bizarre dream. It felt to surreal, no in fact it had to be real. You were staring into black, pure black. There was no feeling outside yourself, and the only light you could see was... was two white eyes. Staring into them, it almost felt like they held a longing sense of need. Then you noticed its eyes shift, widened and focused on you, there were no pupels and no sense of a face, but somehow.... it was calming, like you knew each other for the longest time. It was as if you just met an old friend, but the eyes were so different. They were almost reptilian in a fashion.
Then you woke up. A single bolt of lighting had awoken you. You stared back to the closet, in the dark. You heard rumbling, almost like rolling. You took it out of your mind and went back to sleep. The next day you woke up, rain still falling.
You roll out of bed and rub your eyes only to look down and stare at: indicates the next chapter needs to be written. |
