Chapter #3

A Garden Trove of delgihts

It has been weeks maybe months since the first colonist landed on the new planet Panoptes-1, it was a barren place, with breathable air but a high near desert-like heat. Many sandstorms blew through whipping up strong gales of wind forcing the first colonist to shape the first town underground. Jonas and Zander were some of such colonists, two brothers whose parents struck a deal and gave the entire family the ability to be among the first here. Life was quite harsh at first but after a resounding amount of hard work amongst the future nano building tech, they brought to their planet. They had their underground town with working water, alarm systems for the storms, and farms of underground food already. Life was stable for now but now everything was boring to the brothers. Since the adults mainly maintained everything and barely needed to since the technology gave them all the information they needed to act appropriately that left a lot of leisure time for the boys. However, there weren't many other boys of their age to play with, down the road was 2 18-year-olds but they spent most of their time trying to woo the female colonist. There were a pair of twins younger than them that were quite fun to play with since everything the two brothers did amaze them. However today they were on water watch duty with their father, lucky it wasn't them because that job is booooring. As well as a few other kids, however, they were far on the other side of town leaving just Jonas and Zander to their own devices. Zander rolls over on the couch, his white tank top and sweat pants ever apparent since it was quite humid in the caves. Jonas wore a more muscle shirt exposing all those weeks working as a mechanic for the transport vehicles in the caves they lived in, as well as a pair of shorts and shoes.

As Jonas was about to throw a dart, "Uuughh...im bored..." Zander groans out flopping on the couch loudly, "So... what do you want me to do about it?" Jonas says staring at his brother in annoyance, this was the second time this minute they had this conversation. "Idk, read me a story?" Zander deadpanned staring at his brother. "No...you can read your own" Jonas replied as he readied himself to throw the dart again, "MISS!!" Zander shouts throwing off Jonas's aim and making him hit the 5 points. Jonas glares at his brother who snickers at the side before rolling his eyes. "Fine, im bored too but what do you suggest, there's no work beyond maintenance and we already went around and made sure everything is good enough for weeks. Mom and Dad are out in the deeper colonies and might be gone for another week, so what do you expect us to do" Jonas states, "hmm I dunno...oooh!! Ohhh!! how about we explore!" Zander says in excitement rushing up to his brother who pauses in disbelief, "explore.....you do know that we haven't had a sandstorm in a week so we're long overdue for one.." Jonas points out, Zander pauses to think about it but shrugs it off... "It's fiiiine its fiiiine, plus I got my reliable smart intelligent handsome big bro to take care of me." Zander follows up giving his brother playful puppy eyes. "oooh, you know I hate when you do that," Jonas says doing his best to resist but the combo of the buttering him up and the puppy dog eyes his brother was giving him right now was almost too much. Jonas sighs as he gives in, "Uggh fine..but we're bringing enough stuff in case something happens out there.." Jonas points out as Zander agrees and cheers the two brothers rush off to get ready.

After a bit of a gear check twice over double checking if they have a radar, communicator, some extra food, and tarps to sleep on, especially since Jonas didn't want to chance getting stuck in a sandstorm.....again... They left out top side to see the two suns of the planet they were on. "Ahhh...don't you love the top side air.." Zander says beaming his brother a smile..."It's...refreshing.."Jonas says as he pulls out the map charting a course straight northwest in a direction they have never been. The two brothers track the barren wastes with gear in tow and shade scarce as the sun beams down on their light-colored skin turning tanner with the sun exposure. their black hair getting glossy and moist as sweat beads down their heads but they were used to it by now. Able to go further and further until some begin to beep loudly in alarm. "W-what!! oh not again.." Jonas groans in dismay, seeing a rockface nearby he swiftly climbs it to see the incoming sandstorm to their location. "Ah..sandstorm?" Zander asks, to which his brother quickly nods. This one looks fast and might be on them in just a mere few minutes, they would have to find cover fast and he means extremely fast. He can already hear the winds whipping up the sand. "There!!" Jonas points as there's a massive wierd cliff face, split down the middle perfect for cover in the sandstorm as the two brothers rush forward towards it the sand encroaches ever so carefully closer. By the time they are upon it the sandstorm has already engulfed them, they can hear nothing but the winds. They can see nothing but dust and sand but both know they need to keep moving forward. Till they arrive or so they thought as they slip and fall to a cavern passage screaming wildly.

Both brothers tumble for a long time, rocks and sand biting at their skin as they roll attempting to gain ground in the foundation around them till they finally fall into an opening. The drop was quite massive maybe 10 to 15 feet, enough to be detrimental but to their surprise, they fell into a massive underground spring. Both boys submerged they quickly resurface, gasping for air, "Zander...ZANDER!!" Jonas shouts out before turning and seeing his brother, relief washing over him like a hefty drug as they swim to shore. Coughing and gagging a bit, Jonas takes time to check their gear..everything is intact, then he makes a note to check on Zander. "Zander, you alright?" Jonas asks as he checks his brother, "Just a few scrapes and cuts, nothing too serious as usual" Zander says turning to his brother to silently check him out, there's a visible new scar on his face and a cut on his arm but nothing serious as well. "You should probably get that," Zander points out some of his brother's wounds before he gets up and feels significant pain in his leg causing him to drop, "Aghh, sprain..." Zander says as he drops to the floor. "Ahh, I got you..." Jonas quickly scoops up his brother as they look around, "There...something interesting over there..." Zander points out and the two brothers move quickly forward through a then passageway. The color of green, red and blue ever apparently gleaned through the crevice that they crawled through before finally revealing to be a clearing..and not just any type of clearing. It was almost like a literal oasis. The two brothers looked around in disbelief, they had never seen so much green before on this planet only reading of such things on the holopads they had for storytime."I...I don't believe it..." Jonas says in a hushed whisper, Zander leaps for joy before curling in pain due to his sprain, they found something very interesting today but the first comes is tending to their wounds.

With a bit of rest and first-aid, their wounds were treated, and Zander could walk again albeit, with a little limp, Jonas took note of their surroundings as many interesting trees and plants were around them. No insects or animals which was something very apparent on this planet but still this sorta leans closer to the fact that there might not be any life beyond the vegetation. As well as none of the plants were carnivorous since they wouldn't have any food source if they leaned in that direction. All Jonas could see was an abundance of fruits and vegetable-like seedlings ready to be plucked off the tree tops surrounding them. Zander his younger brother even held one and proved that even though he was about 4ft2 these fruits were massive going up to his waist. Jonas being 6ft4 was taller than the lowest fruit plants and even then they were quite plump and massive. Many holes in the ceiling let them know the sandstorm was still raging on so they wouldn't need to leave anytime soon. So for now the boys build a little base camp with the shapable nanotech they always brought with them making a little house and placing out their gear to plan their next move.

That is until, *Crunch*, Jonas turned to his side to see Zander munching on that fruit he held shaped similar to the pears he read about, a lot of juice spilled from the fruit getting all over Zanders's chest. "Zander what are you doing...it could be poisonous, or deadly or...or" Jonas runs through multiple possibilities before Zander shouts, "Delicious...this is so much better than the food back at camp," Zander exclaims handing a piece of the fruit to Jonas who gives it a moment's thought before trying it out, they couldn't be poisonous if they had no predators so it's worth a shot.. and he too found it was delicious. "W-wow.." Jonas says taken aback before as he watches his younger brother chow down on the fruit eagerly sharing the other half with Jonas. As they finished the first fruit the two lay down and smile. "well..at least they have a food source.."
