The school year was coming to an end; unfortunately for you, your grades weren't too great. You weren't in danger of failing any classes except for history, and that was hardly even your fault. Your teacher, Mr. Novak, hated you for no reason!
You had to go talk to him about your grades, If you didn't pass, you'd have to go to summer school, and there was no way you were spending your first summer with a driver's license in school.
The bell rings at the end of the day and you rush to Mr. Novak's room. He notices you standing in the doorway.
"What do you want, Jack?" he sighs.
"I wanted to talk about my grades," you say, breathless.
He sighs again. "Mr. Gates, there's simply no way you can raise your grades up by the end of the year. I'm afraid you're going to have to attend summer school."
"No! Please- no! Just..." you stammer, "There must be some kind of extra credit assignment!"
He looks up at you and raises an eyebrow.
"YOU want to do extra credit?" he chuckles, "Of all the things I've heard! Well, there is one thing I have for you. I'm afraid it's a bit of a commitment, however."
"Yeah, whatever- sign me up," you say, a sense of relief flooding through your body.
"Okay, well, the first step is- choose one of the textbooks on my table," he says.
