At school.

Right now you're at school, though probably not in class. While school is compulsory, the hours spent in education are mainly used for socialising, giving young adults a stable peer group by which to learn and experiment with the rules and mores of Velusian culture, and to give their parents or guardians a few hours off each day to indulge themselves. While actual study is encouraged, it is entirely optional. At the end of each year, an exam is set to ascertain each student's knowledge in their chosen subjects. Any gaps in this knowledge are simply imprinted into the students' brains like writing data onto a computer hard drive, a painful but quick process.

Having flunked every year since kindergarten, getting your brain blasted with electricity is a familiar experience. Doctors say 30% of your brain is scar tissue and that it'll need replacing soon, which is pretty cool. In any event, a few seconds of agony every year is a small price to pay for the joy of spending your education playing, romping, exploring and vandalising the school grounds with your friends.

Avoiding the teachers is a challenge. While you have the freedom to behave as wantonly as you wish, they too have the freedom to mete out any punishment, no matter how cruel, if they catch you in the act. The letters of complaint sent the school to your parents go unnoticed - your mum and dad have spent the last five years inside a video game, their brains wired into a virtual experience while their bodies vegetate on the living room couches.
