Chapter #4

An abandoned shrine

by: Dancing Spartan Author IconMail Icon
Upon first glance, it looked like an old Japanese dwelling, with an older house and what seemed to be a small shrine of some kind. The house had it’s front door wide open, though Penn supposed that even if anyone lived there, they didn’t have much for burglars to steal or anything. There was a little fountain like he had seen in some anime, complete with little statues around it. All in all, was the quintessential Japanese setting.

“Bro, can I just have a look around?” Brad asked his older brother in all eagerness. “I won’t go far. I promise!”

Penn had many good reasons to turn him down, but they had already gone out this far. What was the harm in exploring further? “Okay, you can look...but stay within earshot, alright?”

“Yes, sir!” the boy responded with a mock salute, before laughing as he jogged through the little trails.

With a sigh, Penn decided to walk through at his own pace. With the sound of the little fountain nearby, the entire place seemed quaint and peaceful, it not a bit eery. Penn almost felt like something could pop out at him if he so much as touched anything. In all honesty, he was starting to wonder if he should even be here.

“Then again, I don’t think anyone is owning this place. They’re doing a crappy job if they are,” he smirked to himself in an effort to calm himself down.

In any case, he passed by the house, opening the door on the other side. Nothing within the house stood out too much besides the dust. However, upon further inspection, there was a little something that stood out.

“Hmm? What’s this?”

If this was part of the shrine, it was pretty small. There seemed to be a number of blocks scattered around the little area. As Penn got closer though, these blocks actually seemed to have some kind of Japanese runic characters. At least, that’s what he guessed.

“Did they play building blocks in ancient Japan?” he chuckled to himself.

Still, he couldn’t help but look them over even more. There were about a dozen of them in all, though he obviously couldn’t understand what they actually meant. As he was holding them in his hands though, he couldn’t help but feel a strange feeling, like….well, he couldn’t describe it honestly. When he looked in front of him, there seemed to be an indention in the little shrine, probably just enough for these 12 blocks.

“I feel like every movie I’ve ever watched is telling me to not do it,” Penn mused with a half-smile, not sure if he was being ironic or just tempting fate even more.

Then again, since when did anyone turn down whatever stupid thing they were doing in movies? With a shrug, Penn kind of messed around with the blocks. Boy, would Brad ever give him some flak if he saw him playing around like this. Testing out his theory about the blocks fitting into the shrine indention, he carefully placed them into the appropriate looking places, until all 12 of them were nearly fitted inside.

“And now we have….something!” Penn said dramatically like he was trying to look smart, and failing. Nothing seemed to happen, as if Penn was expecting something like in anime.

“....What am I doing?” he slapped his forehead. “What was I expec…..”

Just as he said that though, the runes on the little shrine began to glow, shining brighter each second before there was a burst of light! Penn cried out a bit as the light blinded him completely. He wasn’t sure what was going on and frankly, he wasn’t sure he wanted to find out.

You have the following choices:

1. A strange girl appears

*Noteb*
2. Penn notices something on him

*Noteb*
3. Something else

*Noteb* indicates the next chapter needs to be written.
