Chapter #5Donnie's Lab Accident by: Unknown Ever since the Turtles had cured April O'Neil's father, Donatello had been working in his lab with feverish zeal, hoping to rediscover the formula for retro-mutagen. It had seemed a relatively straightforward task at first, given that there seemed to be no end to the amounts of pure mutagen he had to work with. Unfortunately for the genius turtle, that was not the case. The mutagen that he had made the antidote from had a plethora of unknown contaminants, and the effects of his attempts to recreate it were...sporadic, to say the least. More than once, the results had ended explosively, destroying all his work and much of his lab equipment.
Of course, other events had distracted him. The turning of Karai, for example, was a huge one. Not only did it lead to many nights of staking out as opposed to research, it now meant that there were two girls living with them in the sewers. April O'Neil often came down to try and help, but whenever she came to sit down and experiment, his thoughts drifted away from the data and towards the lovely girl in front of him. Less often, Karai came down as well -- more out of a perceived obligation to help her father than Donnie's work actually interesting her. And so, the nights where he was alone, when he worked best, grew fewer and more scattered -- though he always made the effort.
It was on one of those rare nights where Donatello believed he had finally found it. This one had the orange color of the original retro-mutagen. A good sign. He slowly, carefully inserted the deep-fried anchovies into the Erlenmeyer flask. The fish fizzed and bubbled in the concoction, slowly dissolving. Then the solution grew brighter. Not a good sign. It began to hiss and rumble. A bad sign. An wisp of orange smoke came out of the top. A very bad sign.
Then there was the explosion.
In terms of the combustions Donnie had experienced, this one was tiny. But as any scientific Ninja Turtle can tell you, it is a very bad idea indeed to mess with mutagen. The acrid orange smoke filled his lungs and burned his skin. His eyes watered as he choked on the fumes of his creation. He stumbled around, blindly trying to find away out, to escape from the suffocation that he was certain to die from. Donatello tripped on a loose cord and fell heavily on a lab stool. His head hit the lip of his desk, just above the iconic purple bandanna. He was knocked out almost instantly. He did not feel the orange cloud expand and eddy around him to fill up his lab, nor did he see it eventually dissipate. More importantly, he did not feel himself diminish, nor did he see the world grow to titanic sizes as he shrank down to the size of a flea on the lab stool. He remained unconscious for another hour.
Around this time, one of the girls came down to see if he had broken the laws of reality again. Not finding him, they decided to poke around his lab, careful not to mess up any of his notes or weird experiments. Eventually, they came across the now-empty Erlenmeyer flask next to the anchovy-less anchovy pizza. Seeing nothing of importance, they continued on to the lab stool. At exactly this point, the flea-sized Donatello, now smaller than a pencil lead, woke up.
Who did he see?
Choice 1: April O'Neil. Donnie's crush will not notice him at first, and instead sit down on the stool, and Donnie...
Choice 2: Karai. The daughter of Splinter will notice him immediately, but she will think he is an insect and brush him off the stool, making him land at her feet, where she will quite possibly try to finish the job.   indicates the next chapter needs to be written. |
