A very familiar face greeted her with wide smile. It was the face she had seen in the mirror basically every day of her life. The new Lisa was saying something but the original Lisa had a hard time understanding any of it. It took her a moment to realize that she likely had Maria’s language skills now, which meant she didn’t really speak English anymore. A technician soon walked in with the interpreter. They explained that everything had gone well and all their readings checked out. They had each been given certain memories and skills so they could function in their new lives, but the core of who they were mentally had been transferred properly.
The tech explained that certain tastes and responses to stimuli stayed with the body. The new Maria had a hard time understanding it all, even with the translator, but she understood that the transfer had gone well and that was what mattered. The new Lisa thanked her again, this time in flawless English and it was the new Maria that was struggling to understand, but the interpreter translated for them.
A representative from the non-profit came up to the new Maria. At first Maria felt like the lady was a bit older than her, then she had to remind herself that she was now 13 years older than she had been as Lisa. The representative was probably around Maria’s current age. That was going to take some getting used to. Maria was reminded that she was no longer a citizen and she would have to be extremely careful in her daily life or she could get picked up and deported. The non-profit would help her out, but she was Maria now, a 31 year old, undocumented immigrant with a very limited English vocabulary and nearly no formal education to speak of.
That really scared Maria, but she was reminded that she had to get to the factory and get on with her new life. There wasn’t a lot of time to consider what she had done, she couldn’t afford to lose what little pay she made at the factory.
