Chapter #5

The amulet malfunctions and makes Mikes neighbo...

    by: MareeGrace Author IconMail Icon
"Well I'd better be leaving" Sandra {Mike's Neighbor} says, practically jumping up and done. " Jake's getting antsy".

"Wait- what about the money" Mike says anxiously. "We had a deal. I'm not carrying this baby for free!"

Sandra looks at him oddly "Well it's not like I got you pregnant. What an odd thing to say" She shakes her head and leaves, still muttering.

Mike watches her nervously. "What is going on!" He whispers quietly. Then he strains to get up from the couch, belly pulling him down. Suddenly a bright white light appears in front of his eyes, whiter than the sun.

Mike feels emotions roll over him like waves at the nearby beach, "Oh hi little baby." He rubs his hands over his belly, filled with excitement for the beating heart next to his to come out in less than a month. He then takes a look around his huge half empty house.

He shakes his head and looks down at his protruding belly and sighs. "How stupid of me to not prepare for you. Look at this place!" He eyes his figurines, his console, his pointy tables, his guitar with a new light. His baby could die!

I'm going to get you all the things I forgot to get tomorrow after work. I'm so irresponsible!

Suddenly, he spots a red glimmer from the ground nearby. An amulet with six small rubies set around an enormous pink diamond. "Ohhh nooo!" He yells. This must be Sandra's! She can't leave it behind!
Mike runs out the door like his house is on fire and races to the nearby red house.

Mike has always envied Sandra's beautiful garden. It's filled with peonies, lilies, and most important daffodils-the same flower his mom loved before she died. Every time Mike misses her he goes on a walk, making sure to watch the daffodils sway in the wind out of the corner of his eye. But now Mike is looking past the daffodils.

"Sandra!" He yells, waddling as fast as he can over to her full car. "Is this your necklace?"

Sandra turns her neck quickly at the ridiculous sight. "No, that's not my necklace. Maybe it's your mom's. I remember her loving rubies and jewellery.

Mike stops short and looks down at the necklace. Maybe it is my mom's. He thinks curiously. I mean, she did love jewellery.

"Oh," He says, embarrased for the scene he caused. "Well, enjoy your trip".

Sandra smiles and pulls a purple tube of sunscreen out of her car. "I will!" She yells. "I'm already putting on sunscreen!"

Mike smiles back and heads for his daily 4pm walk. He walks past the daffodils (Obviously), for two blocks and then heads to the park, all the while staring at the red necklace intently.

Suddenly, he feels the pink diamond in the center move a little. "Odd." He says, a little bored. He then walks past the playgroujnd. Next to him is a frazzled mom with two little boys next to her and a stroller nearby. She has an auburn friend next to her with a small bump.

He pushes down the button, hoping it might open the locket, possibly to a picture of his mom inside. But it doesn't. Instead, he feels a slight shock on his fingertip. "OW!" He yells. The mom's friend looks at him and then looks right back at the stroller.

"You're so lucky you have kids." She says enviously. "Me and Jonah have been trying for five months but nothing!"

Mike looks down at his enormous belly, thankful for both of the little darlings inside him. "I never meant to have you, I don't even know HOW I have you, but I'm still thankful anyways. Mike then
