"A treasure hunt?" Boruto and his friends stood in front of a notice board announcing quite an atypical message, a friendly invitation to all genin of the leaf village to partake in some sort of searching mission for a "hidden scroll".
The announcement would have been deemed quickly as suspicious if it wasn't signed by none other than the Hokage himself, Boruto's father, and what was worse was the way it implied an unknown reward that might or might not have an influence in the upcoming exams
"Why bother with such a thing? this is too weird" Shikadai commented, the challenge not really motivating him as expected despite being billed as some sort of game he could win. Boruto also had his doubts, though most of them were with what was going through his father's head to do something like this, and a quick expression at his other teammates made him conclude Mitsuki was at least somewhat curious about participating, but Sarada wanted no part in that at all. Boruto and his friends decided to move on and ignore the invitation for now.
However, after a couple of days Boruto and even Shikadai were starting to be tempted to join, because some of their other genin classmates were interested and actively searching already. For some reason none of the girls wanted to waste time in such a task, thinking it would distract them from their valuable training time, but the boys seemed to welcome that distratction and even daydream about whatever the prize was for finding the scroll before anyone else.
And what convinced them to at least try for a bit was seeing how Mitsuki independently decided to start searching too on his own, even if he rarely disagreed with whatever Boruto decided and the last time they talked about it they decided to ignore the strange task, so even without being truly motivated as he believed getting an unique advantage for the chuunin exam would be kind of unfair if that was the prize, Shikadai started to think about the optimum places to hide a valuable scroll in the village, while Boruto couldn't help but think his father could be personally involved in this and hoped that thinking like him would allow him to find the scroll, and winning the prize would allow him to talk some sense into the Hokage who just never spent enough time with his family these days
