Upon seeing James, you gave him a warm hug, which he returned. "I missed you." releasing him, you said. "Where have you been all year?"
"Training." with a smile, James replied. "I take it you know the family secret."
"Yeah, Tex showed me by giving me a shower in the sitting room." ruefully, you replied. "Dad said something about him having a different situation if he didn't earn his lab soon..."
"That has to do with you." interrupting, James said. "You see, being twins, you and he share a sort of connection that determines both of your fates."
"Our fates?" worried, you asked. "What do you mean?"
James sighed and pointed to a portrait of mom, hanging on the wall above the fire place. "Dad, as you know, is a mad scientist." sadly, he said. "Mom was a witch, they fell in love. When the boy twin of a witch reaches a certain age, he becomes a girl and a witch to form a balance."
"Are you saying I'm a witch?" surprised, you asked. "Is that the power dad said I had?"
James nodded. "Only you must discover this power on your own; we do not have the ability, or rather, the magic to give it to you early." serious, James said. he summoned a flame to his hand. "When this appears in your hand, it means you have discovered the power and will need to be trained."
"By who?" nervous, you asked.
"Dad and I have that worked out, don't worry." with a rueful smile, James replied. "The point is, if you gain magic before Tex gets his lab, he will risk becoming your sister, your true twin."
"What!?" taken back, you asked. "That's why he wants his lab so badly..."
"On the same side of the coin, however." raising a finger, James said. "If he gets his lab before you discover magic, you may end up becoming his brother, his true twin."
"What do you mean 'might' become his brother?" not liking the idea, you asked.
"The magic within you may protect you from what we call the 'twin factor'." patiently, James replied. "Tex's chaotic energy, his mad science, may equally protect him but there is really no telling until it happens."
"I see..." softly, I said. "Talk about sibling rivalry."
"Its not really rivalry." gently, James said. "Just the life of a family of mad scientists and witches."
With that, he walked out of the room, leaving you more shaken than before.
