(To make it clear, this is the DCAU that started with Batman the Animated Series and spanned to Justice League Unlimited.)
STAR Labs, the premier research and development laboratory on Earth, had entered the final stage of their latest inventions initial test run. After the incursion of a parallel world's version of the Justice League, they had spent a significant portion of their funding on a device that would allow them to detect inter-world travel and if all went well, even facilitate it. A group of scientists, each near the top of their respective fields, had worked tirelessly all for this test that would prove whether or not their theories were correct.
They stood behind a wall of thick concrete reinforced with steel, their only eyes being various high definition cameras that had been set at different angles surrounding the intended dimensional gateway. The tall, arching structure was laced with wires, and tubes all around the base, in the center was a swirling mass that, properly manipulated, would puncture a hole in the fabric of space and open into another world.
"Final checks have been completed, proceed to activation," stated one of a multitude of technicians from behind their workstation.
With a flip of the switch, the magnificent machine hummed to life, the mass began to expand until it reached the outer edges of the gate, becoming a vortex of energy as it tried to bore into another plane of existence.
"Levels are holding steady, formation of gateway is underway."
The vortex intensified in speed, spiraling into itself as it drilled into the fabric of reality. All was going as planned, until the excess energy began to arc across the empty room, striking one of the primary control modules, and all hell broke loose.
"Malfunction in the containment field!" came a cry. "The gateway is opening, but we have no way to control where it going to open on either end!"
The reality of the situation was far worse than they knew, as multiple holes into parallel and alternate worlds opened across the entire east coast of the United States. From Gotham to Metropolis and beyond, random things pulled from other realities were pulled through.
"Cut the power! We need to stop this now!"
An order that was quickly followed, much to the relief of the gathered men and women of science. The vortex slowed until it dissipated entirely, ending the chaos that they had unintentionally caused.
