The gem glowed with an emerald light. When Snotlout picked it up, he saw it wasn't just catching the Sun. It seemed to have an inner glow, a spark that danced in the centre. It fitted comfortably in the palm of his hand, as he wondered if it could be valuable. If he found more he could sell them to the village women... or give one as a present to Astrid.
Spending the rest of the afternoon hunting, he was tired and frustrated as the Sun dipped behind the mountains. He still only had that one gem. He tried and failed to stifle a yawn. Returning to the warmth of Hookfang's body, he rested against his dragon's flank. The warmth eating away at his last reserves. Settling himself, he looked deep into the stone, Hookfang's tail curling around to keep him cosy.
It felt hypnotic, the light dancing within, hinting at but never revealing a sinuous dancer. A smile spread over his features, as he dropped off. Eyelids getting impossibly heavy, Snotlout fell asleep, to dream in the comfortable, safe embrace of his dragon's warm body.
