Chapter #6

Sure, and not only other dragons.

by: Mr. George Author IconMail Icon
Fishlegs is surprised by Snotlout's interest in any dragon apart from his own. But doesn't want to miss the opportunity to talk.

"Well you know how Stormfly is mostly blue with a plain white belly."

Snotlout just nodded along. Meatlug went on to describe the dark spine that would look out of place, even warning the young viking of the danger of plucking it.

Both from the affronted dragon, and the risk from the spine itself especially if he didn't wear gloves.

Already he was planning how to get close to Astrid, naturally using his charm and her fascination with his masculine viking virility. His chest puffed out, already it felt almost too easy.

But he waited another hour or so, listening to Fishlegs witter on endlessly about the other spines on a nadder and the effects they could have on a subject that was struck by them. He didn't want it to be too obvious, if Hiccup became a girl just after he'd asked about the effects of nadder spines. So he kept his interest as best he could occasionally piping in with a half-hearted question.

"Wow... fascinating.... truly fascinating." he said when he heard enough.

Fishlegs didn't pick up on the sarcasm, happy as he was to spread his dragon knowledge to every other flier, even Snotlout.

As Hookfang and Snotlout flew away, he tossed a pebble into Meatlug's gaping maw.

"You know he's not half bad, if you give him a chance, Meatlug."

Snotlout had to restrain himself from acting immediately. It was almost a physical pain to hold himself back from immediate action. It was unviking-like, he told himself. But after flying across the island, Hookfang was in need of a good sleep.

He went to bed and had a good sleep. In his dreams there was even a new figure, a new Hiccup, a female Hiccup... a rival with Astrid for the attention of the new chief in waiting.

He woke to a banging on the door.

Yawning and scratching he went to the door. Without opening he knew who it was. Hiccup.

"Time for the Dawn Patrol." Hiccup's happy voice carried through the thick wood.

"Perhaps a couple of spines through his bedroom window." Astrid suggested half-jokingly... but only half.

As he opened the door the chill air finished the job of waking him up.

Hiccup was already mounting up. Toothless eager to be away. The twins were knocking lumps out of one another as their dragon hovered in the air. On the other side of Hiccup were Astrid on Stormfly and Fishlegs and Meatlug. As ever the gronkle was the most stable of the dragons as they hovered around the viking standing in the doorway.

He took a moment to examine the nadder.

Astrid's control was excellent he hated to admit. But from this angle it was very clear which particular spine that Fishlegs had been describing. Spotting it put a smile on his face.

He leapt to Hookfang's back in a couple of bound, and landed ready to fly.

Hiccup was already leading from the front. They flew in a rough V-formation. With Toothless at the apex. Just to the left and slightly behind went Stormfly. She was followed by the twins on Barf and Belch. Forming a line from Toothless's right was only Meatlug. With a gap for his Monstrous Nightmare to fill.

Once in formation, they circled on the thermals rising higher until they dove in formation across the village, heading for the harbour before doing a complete circuit of the island.
