Stormfly eyed him suspiciously, as Snotlout went from one dragon to the next. Starting with his monstrous nightmare, he rarely bothered with the others. So sure that size, and might meant that Hookfang was the better dragon. Barf and Belch recoiled their long necks, when he went to stroke them. Meatlug, wasn't there, doubtless Fishlegs was giving her a special treat. He snorted at the thought.
Finally, Snotlout reached the dragon he'd wanted all along. With her stubbier body, and large head, she couldn't flex like the Zippleback. She tolerated the attention, as long as he didn't try and mount her. He wasn't her rider, and she wasn't his dragon. However, she did appreciate a good scratch. There were certain spots, she could reach with her claws, and her gouts of flame couldn't quite satisfy the itch.
She even started to lean in to the attention, curving her spine to allow an easier reach. As Snotlout's hand wandered downwards, Stormfly's tail was starting to curl around his ankle. Ready to hold him in place, to extend this attention.
They both knew, when he reached a loose spine. Like loose scales, it fell out with only the least effort. A replacement spiky spine already budding from the root, and ready to replace the tiny gap in her armoured flesh.
Normally, Snotlout would've tossed away the spine. But, this time, he turned it over in his hand. The gold and pale blue spine was exactly what he wanted. There was a trace of black liquid at it's root. Still fresh, he'd noticed it distractedly before, but ignored it. That... oil... he mused, usually dried up before long, and he'd never been aware it had any use before. Now, he looked at it with reverence and fear. Knowing the potent power, that glob of black goo, could do with the right preparation.
