A trickle of salt water entered his mouth, waking him. Arvid woke spluttering, with the back of his hand he wiped away the dribble of saliva coming from the corner of his mouth. He felt a little disoriented as he looked around.
He ran his hand over his chin, once more. Just to confirm.
Yup... he needed a shave. Beneath his breastplate, he discovered he was male. That he was... he guessed Hiccup's brother.
He wasn't sure how he knew that... but it felt right. A fact that couldn't be doubted.
Gunna...
He cast about for the wise woman, but she was nowhere to be seen. The chill of the sea was seeping into his leggings, so Arvid got to his feet. Or rather he would have, but once he was kneeling he found the scarlet stone was still beneath his hand. It was quieter, and he found himself reluctant to let it go.
There was still activity deep inside. He finished standing up, and looked around for the simplest way back to the village. Idly he cast the stone back and forth between his hands.
He felt a sense of loss. Hiccup could no longer be her companion. But that was the price, and Astrid... or Arvid was willing to pay. It would be different in the village now. He could settle into being the best viking he could be. And there was also the fact that Snotlout wouldn't be hitting on him.
Arvid was Hiccup's younger brother. But Arvid was happy with that, she...-damn it- he'd have to get used to the damned pronouns. He trusted Hiccup.
As he caught the stone in his other hand, Hiccup came to mind again.
Arvid almost dropped the stone in surprise. It was Hiccup, and she was cute. He knew... He absolutely knew that Hiccup's future... was literally in his hands.
Thoughts raced through Arvid's mind as he considered the potential possibilities.
