Astrid was looking out over the sea. Stormfly had found her a spot that none of the others had discovered. It was just below the snowline, with a view over Berk that glittered red in the light of the fading sun. Stormfly was snoozing behind a pine tree leaving her to explore the rest of the ledge.
It didn't take her long there was only room for a couple of dozen trees and a few boulders. She was cursing her fate. That as a viking female she would be expected to marry and give up her freedom to be somebody's wife. She looked over to her dragon, his eyes flickered fitfully behind his lids as he slept a puff of smoke escaping his nostrils as he dreamed.
"It just isn't fair." she muttered aloud.
She liked Hiccup, at least she thought she did. Whenever she thought of him she felt confused and angry and happy, and more confused.
But surely it would be fairer if she were the Chief's son, and Hiccup was the girl. She trained harder and everybody knew it. Hiccup well, he was just Hiccup... smart and all... but, without his luck with Toothless, he'd still be a joke in the village and an embarrassment to Stoick.
Now there was a viking, he lead from the front, and nobody questioned his order.
That was all fine and dandy. But the world is the way it is. She jumped for a branch and started to do chin-up exercises. Quickly she reached ten before being satisfied with her progress. It was the branch that failed first, with a loud -crack- it snapped and she fell to the ground.
She rubbed her behind, glad that none of the other trainers were there to observe this particular moment. The vibration woke Stormfly and he looked over at his rider, his mouth forming a snarl, or perhaps a smile. A lick of flame cleaned his teeth and satisfied that she wasn't in 'real' danger he closed his eye dismissively.
