Unknown to the employees of Wilkinson and the few customers who were in the store at 4:30pm in the afternoon had no idea they were being observed by a unique extra terrestrial intelligence with the power to manipulate organic matter. The ability to exchange people's physical and mental traits, which is where it got its name from. There were other parts of the world that had already been visited by this alien being, and now it was in England, selecting the people who worked in an otherwise ordinary store in a quiet, 'multicultural' town as its targets.
"Please tell me we've taken more money than yesterday Donna!" Liz muttered to one of the day staff as she approached the Help Desk. She knew the shop hadn't been meeting its budget lately, and was eager for it to do so.
"A little more yeah" Donna replied, having worked out the sums. Donna was excellent at maths, and had been all her life. At 43 years old she had worked at Wilkinson for the past 12 years, a couple more years than Liz. The mature woman was wearing her red 'Wilko' blouse, a pair of black, boot-cut trousers and a pair of size 5 (UK) black patent pumps. Liz had on near identical clothes except her footwear was size 7 (UK) flat black shoes with laces.
"Oh that's a relief!" Liz sighed, as she put her hands on her hips and looked around. There were quite a few customers around, as well as the women sat at the cashpoints scanning their items through the tills. And of course all the usual members of the Evening team were in work, having started early.
The blueish haze that was the Role Exchanger hovered nearby, observing everyone and waiting to make its move.
But how would it start swapping people's traits around??
