A SUPERNATURAL PREGNANCY.

Samantha flipped the gold coin and in the crowd Samantha saw Inez Taylor, a girl from her high school senior basketball team. Inez was the star player. Samantha hadn't seen her since their class reunion ten years earlier. Amazing that Inez still looked young; her red hair was bright so it must have come from a bottle, but she was as slender as when she played center on the basketball team.

Samantha quickly pushed through the crowd to catch up with Inez who appeared to be headed toward the gate to leave the flea market. "Inez. Inez," called Samantha.

Inez turned around. She saw the older blonde rushing toward her. When she drew closer, Inez recognized Samantha. "Hey, Samantha! I never dreamed I'd see you here, or anyplace other than a class reunion." The two women shared a hug.

Samantha laughed. "I couldn't believe it was you, Inez. You've been on my mind a lot lately." She seemed flustered for a moment. "Oh, gosh, I completely forgot the coin." She looked around. "I just had an old coin and flipped it, but before it hit the ground I saw you. I wonder if it landed heads or if it was tails. Oh, well, it doesn't matter. It was just an old coin I paid a buck for."

Inez smiled. "It must have been magical because I've been thinking of you lately. Let's go have a drink and catch up on things."

"Okay," Samantha said. "Let me tell my friends who I came with so they won't worry about me. Oh, there they are. I'll be right back." She hurried to where her friends were. "Hey, you guys, I'm going for a drink with an old school pal. Glad you brought me here today." She started to walk away. "Oh, you can keep the coin. I'm no longer interested."

Her friends waved and shouted. "The happy face was up so that was good." Not knowing anything about the coin, Samantha didn't know it meant Inez would soon be dealing with being pregnant. She hurried back to Inez.

"Sam, I'm glad you found me today. It's some kind of miracle." Inez drove toward downtown. "Where would you like to go? I like the Rainbow, but if another place fits you better, say the word."

"Oh, the Rainbow bar's fine. I've been there with gay friends at times." Samantha smiled.

Inez was curious. Learning that Samantha had been to the Rainbow might mean something special. "I haven't seen you when I've been there. Sam, have you come out as a lesbian? I have."

Samantha was stunned for a moment. She looked out the side window at some children playing in the park. "Well, I've thought about it. When I think about my life, who I married, my decision to end the marriage, and things like that, I wonder about my heart. Actually, Inez, my happiest years was in high school and being on the team, not just basketball, but softball, field hockey and tennis." She twirled a strand of hair as she looked at Inez. "I had a crush on Jeannie in ninth grade and you in twelfth; but maybe I just enjoyed good friendships. And, I never really felt love's excitement in my heart all the years with my husband. He said it was because I didn't want his kids, but I think it was that I really wanted to be with a woman. I might be a lesbian. What about you?"

"Girl, I know I am. I came out after my thirtieth birthday and have lived happily ever since. Of course, my parents disowned me but I did fine and had a wonderful wife for eight years. She died of breast cancer and I still miss her. This might surprise you." Inez stopped at a red light and looked into Samantha's eyes, "I had a crush on you all my senior year and, my Mary even looked like you. That may have been the reason I fell in love with her when I did."

"Inez, really? You did? Too bad we couldn't act on our girl crush back then. Maybe we'd have gotten together. One thing I'll do right now is to say 'I am a lesbian; always was; always will be.'" She smiled. "Wow, a big weight just lifted off of me. I'm finally free."

Inez and Samantha went inside the bar and ordered drinks. After she took a drink from her glass, Inez put her hand on her stomach. "Excuse me. I've gotta run; I think I'm going to throw up." She hurried to the rest room where she 'lost' her lunch and felt queasy.

Samantha followed Inez. "You look peeked, so white. Are you okay?"

"I'll be fine. Who knows, maybe I'm pregnant." She laughed. "As if that were possible; no man's been inside me; not ever!" Inez stared laughing.

"Oh sure," said Samantha as she laughed with her friend. "Sure, you're a virgin and pregnant. That'd be some kind of miracle."

"Of course I'm not." Inez led Samantha back to their table. "What kind of coin did you say you bought?"

"It was gold and had a smiley face on one side and a frowning face on the other. Didn't meant anything to me."

"Sam, that's the coin. We're pregnant if you looked straight at me when you flipped it. Everyone's been talking about such a coin and we joked about someone here at the bar finding and flipping it. I can't believe this." Inez paused for a minute. "Okay, Sam, we're in this together. You gotta go with me to the doctor tomorrow to find out. There must be a wonderful reason both of us were at the flea market today."

"Inez, you mean we suddenly see each other after all this time, know we're lesbians who had a girl crush on each other and now are bound by the coin. That makes me happy. Wow! Makes me happy." Samantha grabbed Inez, pulled her close and kissed her.

Inez relaxed in Samantha's arms. "Even if the coin thing and being pregnant mean nothing, Sam, I want to marry you and be with you for the rest of my life."

Samantha laughed. "I've heard about the coin but figured it was a myth. How could such a thing be real?"

Inez laughed with her. "Honey! I hope it's not a myth. I'd love to have a baby and to have you as my wife. If wonders can happen, let it be. Let's go home and make heavenly love tonight."

Samantha smiled. "Sounds wonderful! Let's go." She put a tip by their glasses and left the bar hand in hand.

Inez drove to her home. "Welcome to your new home, Sam."

Inside, Inez started dinner. "Sam, even if this pregnancy thing is a myth and I'm not pregnant, I want to spend the rest of my life with you."

Samantha looked into her eyes. "That's what I want. I've never forgotten you and how much I wished we could have been more than friends. I have peace in my heart about acknowledging I'm a lesbian. And, I want to always be with you. What will we name her if she's a girl?"

Inez laughed. "Any name you choose as long as its our middle names; that would be Lou Ann. What if its a stinkin' sweet little boy?"

Samantha laughed. "We can flip a coin, maybe a penny and if it's head, we'll name him Lincoln."

"Sounds perfect."

Inez took Samantha by the hand and led her to the bedroom. "Let's shower together then I want to make love to you. Your first time as a lesbian with a lesbian who loves you."

Moments later, both women were under the warm spray of the shower sharing kisses, hugs and enjoying soft touching as their bodies drew together.

Two days later, Inez went to the doctor and learned that, indeed, she was pregnant. She stopped at the gift shop and bought two little dolls to present to Samantha that evening.

At the end of dinner, Inez presented a wrapped gift to Samantha. "Something special just for you."

When Samantha opened the box, she shouted gleefully. "Wonderful! Wonderful! we're going to be mama's. I love the idea of sharing a baby with you, Honey."

They kissed and went to bed that evening with loving to share and dreams of joy in their minds.

Inez awoke every morning to rush to the bathroom, throw up, then laugh because she was pregnant and was happy to share the baby with her wife.

Quickly, Inez's clothes no longer fit her; strangely she got bigger faster than any pregnancy she had ever heard of. She worried. "Sam, this is too weird. It's happening so fast. What do people say about that myth?"

"Inez, I've heard the pregnancy takes nine days instead of nine months. Maybe we need to buy things for the nursery right away. Let's go tonight." Samantha picked up her car keys. "Let's go to Target tonight."

"Okay, let's do." She followed Inez out the door.

The two mothers-to-be had fun selecting a crib, bathinette, baby clothes and other supplies at Target. The store clerk asked them, "Usually, the mom-to-be brings her husband with her to buy things for the nursery. Why isn't he with you?"

The mothers-to-be laughed.

They stayed up late that evening putting things together in the nursery.

Lying in lovers' arms, Inez and Samantha slept peacefully that night.

The ninth day, Inez began to have labor pains. "Honey, it's time. I'm in labor. Let's go to the hospital. You've got to be with me every minute."

At the hospital, the Admitting Nurse wheeled Inez's to the birthing room. Just before they got there, Samantha told her, "Honey, I need to run back to the car for something. I'll be right back."

She walked as fast as she could to the parking lot, opened the trunk of the car to get a gift she had purchased for Inez. It was something special for the birthmother. Just before she closed the trunk, she spotted something gold and shiny. It was the coin. "Oh my God!" She picked it up and saw it was in fact the same coin so she held it tightly as she walked back into the hospital.

She got upstairs just in time to watch Lou Ann drop from her mother's body. She smiled and whispered in Inez's ear, "Lou Ann is here not." The mothers shared a kiss then reached to touch the tiny little girl placed on her mommy's tummy.
