The fox clawed at the candybugs trying to crawl into this mouth. The torch's light didn't extend very far, but William could see thousands of the creatures heading towards him. If he let all of them into his belly, he'd surely explode. Rather than trying to defeat all these opponents, the best William could hope for was to escape unharmed.
Swinging his sword, William swiped at the candybugs skittering towards him. Knocking back dozens at time, William began his retreat. Yet his attacks were useless. The candybugs were starting to overwhelm his. Other candybugs were crawling on top of each other to get to him.
Rather than trying to keep up the fight, William decided that running away would be his best option. He turned around and started to spirit into the deep darkness of the cave. This was successful since the candybugs could not keep up with his speed.
William turned his head during his escape and saw that no more of the candybugs were closely following him. Suddenly, the fox felt that he was falling. The torchlight didn't let him see much of what was ahead, but when he had briefly looked away, William didn't see the cliff that his path turned into.
Seconds, minutes, hours? William wasn't sure how long he was falling. What he did know was the hard, cold surface his slammed into which knocked him unconscious.
After some time, William awoke. His body was sore because of the fall, but he couldn't feel any major injuries aside from some nasty bumps any bruises. The extinguished torch laid on the ground next to him. The fox reignited it to get a sense of his bearings, and the first thing he saw was...
