Chapter #4

"Jake" with the Controller

You push the button harder and harder until your thumb is red and sore, and your hand is begging you to stop. You toss the controller at "Jake" who barely catches it. "Try using it!" you wheeze. "Point at me and press the button."

"I don't know what you're trying to do--"

"Do it!!" You feel exactly like your mother when you, Cassandra or Jenny gets on her nerves. Only this time there's a lot more at stake than an evening's rest.

Jake, sensing this fury, complies. He points the controller at your forehead and presses on the controller. He holds it for a few seconds and then releases his finger. He points it lower and tries again. Then lower and again. And again. He goes from head to torso, as far as he feels comfortable pointing, but the controller refuses to give any indication it contains voodoo magic. The LED light remains off. Nothing buzzes inside it. There's no click. Furious, you snatch it from him and hurl it against the wall. There's a loud thud and plastic shudder but the controller refuses to break. It slides onto the carpet.

"Mom!" Jake screams. "What the fuck!?"

"Mom?" You hear the door open and see Cassandra peep in. "What's going on?"

"Mom is going psycho because of that..." Jake gestures towards it before the word comes, "controller! I don't know what it does, I just found it coming back from school and I picked it up, why not? But Mom's..."

He tapers off as both of you watch Cassandra worm in and pick up the controller. "What, this?" she asks them. She points it. Jake seizes up. You stand there calmly, and watch as her thumb gives a preemptive wiggle and comes down...
