This choice: Pretend to be your mom for now • Go Back...
Chapter #3
Waiting for a Sign
by: Unknown
"Mom?" your body says again. Why is your voice so high? Of course, you're hearing it from outside your head now. It sounds like it does in video recordings. That doesn't make it any less surreal.
"Jake?" you say, just to see if he responds to his name. He says nothing, but you know he's waiting for you to go on. "I think I'm still me," you think, "I'm really my mom now."
"Uhh." You need to say something before your body freaks out. "Jake, I... You should make something for yourself to eat. I won't be able to make dinner tonight."
It's a pretty stupid excuse, but it's the best you can think of right now. Jake seems to take it. He groans and says, "Fine," before getting up and walking out the door. You watch your body trudge down the stairs.
"Mom?" your sister Jenny calls from her room. "Does that include me too?"
"Yes," you say. "And Cassandra too. Could you tell her."
"I heard too," Cassandra says from the other side of the hall. She peeks out of her room. "I'll get something at Ann's house."
She slides back in and closes her door. You're left standing alone in the hallway. Sweat beading on your forehead and your ass feeling clammy with no cover between it and your pants. You put your hand on your mother's hair, as if it might turn out to be a wig and beneath it you'll find yourself again. But no. The short, flared coiffure doesn't budge. You have to live your mom's life now.
"Until I find a way out of this," you think. "Or I get my hands on that controller."
