Sometimes the people we know, from acquaintances to those the closest to us, struggle. Is it a momentary worry -- would a word of encouragement be all that is needed? Would you recognize depression in the words and actions of a friend?
These are hard things to consider. Being a great listener and feeling compassion are rewarding abilities I think all can learn.
I want to give an example from my own life.
Seeing a talent in someone and being a supporter, one helping that talent be both nurtured and recognized. This is one area of success with my daughter as she struggled in her early teenage years.
She blended her enjoyment of creating origami flowers with the need to give affirmations to others.
The place where honesty and recognizing need co-exist. Those affirmations were exactly what she needed to hear and believe about herself. So much easier to give compliments to others. But in her willingness to do so, she opened others capacity to give compliments back for her talent and generosity.
