Following a non-eventful evening, Madison went to class the following day. She was somewhat nervous, not really for the academic part, which she knew she would be fine in, but socially. After being so popular in high school, she hoped the ability for her to make new friends would still be present. As she paced the campus, Madison looked at what she had written on a small sheet of notebook paper, Lit 101, Old Main Rm 3004.
When she finally got to the classroom, Madison saw that most of the seats were filled, a bummer for her, because she wanted a bit of control in who she sat next to. The closest open seat was next to a guy who looked pretty large, at least 270 pounds, and seemed to be somewhat uncomfortable. Madison sat down and did not say anything, creating an awkward silence for a second.
"Are you a freshman as well?" the guy asked.
"Yeah, what gave me away?" Madison responded.
"You had kind of the same look of nervousness as I did walking in." he said.
"Ha! Yeah, I don't have that great of a poker face, I guess."
"I'm Alex," he responded,
"Madison."
As they waited for the professor to come in, Alex and Madison got chatty. She learned that he was from Chicago, and was looking to go into business. She liked that he seemed laid back and easy going, and was outgoing enough to take the first step in talking to her. Madison wasn't mean, but she knew she was hot, and that it sometimes intimidated boys, which alternated between annoying and flattering her.
Madison and Alex became friends that day, and throughout the beginning of the semester, Madison looked forward to her literature class and getting to talk to Alex about class, gossip, or other things. She never really invited him out socially though, even though he would have enjoyed it, Madison just didn't really think about it on Fridays or Saturdays when her and girls were thinking of hitting up a party on fraternity row, or when she was going to grab dinner with friends, they just seemed to be class friends.
This arrangement worked fine, until Alex decided that he wanted to see more of Madison.
