Chapter #5

A new modification card

    by: Logan Author IconMail Icon
It had been eight years since the D-Reaper's defeat, and seven years since Digimon had been able to return to the real world. Within that time, humans and Digimon had learned to live in all but perfect harmony: individual Digimon can now be considered pets or people depending on a variety of different factors; Digimon viewed as people can have jobs, and get married (to humans or other Digimon); Digimon fighting is now classified as an official sport in the same vein as martial arts and wrestling; the list goes on. But most importantly, instances of hostile digimon emerging from the Digital World have been reduced to less than one a week. Furthermore, the hostile Digimon that do emerge are very swiftly dealt with by the ever-vigilant Digimon Tamers; humans that are partnered with Digimon for

One such Digimon Tamer was Rika Nonaka and her partner Renamon. Rika was twelve years old when she and Renamon first met, and their relationship at the time was not one that could be called "friendly;" they had seen each other as means of becoming stronger and little else. It wasn't until they had met Takato Matuski and Henry Wong and saw how the two boys and their Digimon - Guilmon and Terriermon, respectively - respected and cared for each other that their mutual apathy and disregard for each other began to dwindle; only then did they truly start to grow stronger, both in power and in character.

Renamon was lying down on Rika's bed reminiscing about how drastically their relationship had changed in eight years since then; where they had once seen each other as little more than a means to an end, they were now romantically attracted to each and had been dating for the last four years. Renamon was even hoping that one of them would work up the nerve to propose one day. In fact, Renamon had already worked up the nerve to propose, but wasn't sure when the time would be right.

Renamon's reminiscing was cut short when Rika came back from a day of shopping with her mother. "Hey, Renamon," she said, glad to finally be home.

"Hi, Rika," Renamon smiled. "How was your day?"

"Long and tedious," Rika said, rolling her eyes. "I swear, shopping with mom is pure torture; it's boring, mom always insists on getting me clothes that I don't want or even need, and it always feels ten times longer than it actually is. I swear, if those new card packs hadn't just hit the shelves today, I wouldn't have gone with her."

Renamon giggled a bit. "Well, if nothing else, you at least got those card packs you wanted."

Rika's face softened a bit. "Yeah, you're right. I made sure to buy at least two of each new pack, and with five new packs released, that's ten packs in total. Each pack contains twenty cards, so that adds up to two hundred cards in total. Most of them are exclusively for the card game and, therefor, would have no effect on a real Digimon, but, since these are special packs designed for Tamers, there's at least one card in each pack that can be used both in the card game and to modify real real Digimon. So let's check out what new cards we got."

Rika and Renamon opened the card packs and looked through what cards they got. The packs were supposed to contain at least one card for modifying real Digimon, but the ten that Rika bought had three of said cards apiece; she couldn't believe her luck. First she and Renamon looked through the card game exclusive cards. Half of the cards were really useful, while the other half were situational at best. Rika shrugged and decided to sort them accordingly. One card in particular stood out to Rika, mainly because it seemed really odd.

"'Healing Junkie'" Rika read the card's description. "'Increases the effect of healing items and skills by 50%, but drains HP by 5% for every other turn health is not restored. Affects all Digimon the user has on the field. Lasts 8 turns. Does not stack.' I can't tell if that's really useful, or very situational." She looked over at Renamon. "Either way, that's all of the cards I can't use to modify you." She then looked back at the remaining cards. "Now let's look at all the cards that CAN affect you."

The modification cards were designed to be used in battle, but could also be used outside of battle for various reasons. In fact there seemed to be some that were made specifically for use outside of battle. Rika sorted them into piles of cards that were exclusively used for battle, cards that could be used in or out of battle, and cards that designed for use outside of battle. Rika noticed that she had three variations of the same card; they all did the same thing, but to varying levels of effect.

"'Muscle Enhancement V1,'" Rika read the first card's description. "'Increases Attack by 50%, but lowers Agility by 25%. Affects one of the user's Digimon. Lasts 3 turns in battle, or until used again outside of battle. Does not stack.' Looks like this card will make you stronger, Renamon."

"So it would seem," Renamon nodded. "You said there were two more variants of that card, so how powerful are they?"

Rika picked up the other two cards. "Well, this one is apparently 'V2.' This one doubles Attack but lowers Agility by 50%. This last one is apparently 'V3.' It quadruples Attack but lowers Agility by 90%. And they all last the same amount of time; 3 turns in battle, or until used again outside of battle. And they don't stack." She then placed them back on her desk.

"Well, let's see how much stronger they make me," Renamon said giddily. "I'm eager to see just how muscular I can be. Use any variant; I'm fine either way."

"Alright," Rika picked up her Digivice and then one of the cards at random and swiped. The card she had randomly picked up was...
