Chapter #6

Fine Dining in Andromeda

When it comes to traveling through space the weight of a vessel is the most limiting factor. So when the Andromeda Initiative was packing for the trip across dark space, things like silverware and tablecloths weren’t on the list of bare essentials they could bring along. As a result, the closest thing to a fancy restaurant the colonists from the Milky Way could establish were bars on the Nexus. That left Sara and Vetra with very few places to have a romantic night out, and they were forced to look for a less conventional venue. When the Tempest landed on Kadara and Ryder told Vetra to get dressed up, the smuggler was understandably skeptical.

The doors of the restaurant slid open, and Vetra’s fears were confirmed. “Ryder, I don’t think either of us should eat anything here…” Whatever the Angara used the building for before the Outcasts took over, it had since been converted a restaurant in the loosest sense of the word; one that didn’t look any cleaner than the rest of the port. Admittedly, the candles on each table were still a nice touch.

Despite how the place looked, Sara was still cautiously optimistic. “Hey, nothing ventured, nothing gained.” Ryder hooked her arm around that of her much taller girlfriend and walked inside.

“Do Humans have a saying for every bad idea they try to talk people into?”

“Pretty much.”

The couple were definitely the best dressed people in the seedy establishment, not that the other patrons had set a very high bar. Sara had hung up her well worn official Andromeda Initiative sweatpants and hoodie in favor of a stylish leather jacket and pants bearing the same blue and white color scheme, while Vetra wore a simple asymmetrical Turian dress that was just a tad darker than navy blue in color, with touches of purple flair here and there.

“This is the first time in my life I’ve ever felt overdressed.” If Turians could blush Vetra would certainly be doing it now. Instead she just felt an uncomfortable fluttering in her stomach. A distracting heat in her shoulders, chest and arms. Embarrassment was not an emotion she encountered often in her old life as a smuggler, and she would much rather be doing just about anything else if it meant she didn’t have to deal with these unfamiliar sensations. But Sara looked happy, and that was more important than her own comfort.

“Oh, shut up. You look awesome.”

The couple sat down together at a table for two by a window that had an unobstructed view of an untouched stretch of Kadara’s surface, the glistening pools of recently purified water reflect a rainbow of vivid colors from the setting sun’s light. Leave it to the Pathfinder to find just about the only romantic view in the whole Cluster. Now it was just a question of whether or not the food was edible.

“Wow, this beautiful.”

Vetra’s awe over the beautiful landscape was cut short, however, when a decidedly grumpy looking Salarian cleared his (or her, it was hard to tell until they said something) throat and placed a single hand made menu on the table. He obviously didn’t think he was going to cross the void between galaxies to become a waiter when he signed up for the Initiative. Before anyone said a word the Salarian left Sara and Vetra to look at the menu while he went to bus a different table.

The menu was a single page of laminated paper with minimal flare. On one side were the levo dishes, and on the other were the dextro ones. The selection wasn’t great, but of the few options presented they all at least sounded appetizing. In the end they both ordered comparable meals of a large cut of grilled seasoned meat and diced collard greens. The Salarian further proved his distaste for his current state of employment by taking his sweet time to serve them, but when the dishes were finally placed in front of them the couple weren’t immediately repulsed. There were no strange colors, it wasn’t over or under cooked, and most importantly it wasn’t still moving.

Ryder took the first bite, cutting off a small slice, cautiously placing it on her tongue. When Vetra saw her girlfriend’s eyes light up, followed by the small busty brunette tucking into her meal with great zeal, the Turian had to try it herself.
