The next morning when Mikey woke up, the first thing he saw was Xan sitting on the end of his bed. The other kid already looked dressed and ready for the day, despite the fact that it was Saturday and most other kids liked to sleep in.
"Why are you up so early?" Mikey yawned loudly. They had spent most of the night playing with each other on Caleb's Xbox. While Mikey still felt like he needed four more hours of sleep, Xan was looking refreshed.
"Oh I don't really need that much sleep, I'm always full of energy!" Xan smiled.
"Well unless you can share some of that with me, I'm going back to sleep." Mikey gave a big, loud yawn. "G'night..." He laid back down on his bed, fully intent on trying to go back to sleep when suddenly his drowsiness disappeared altogether and a bolt of adrenaline rushed through him. Suddenly he wasn't the slightest bit sleepy at all!
"Come on, wake up, your mom has breakfast on the table already!" Xan said as he threw the sheets off Mikey and tugged him out of bed.
At the breakfast table, Caleb kept on looking over at Xan who sat across from him. He didn't know what the kid was planning, but he didn't trust him one bit. Caleb kept on expecting Xan to DO something, but the kid just sat there, eating his eggs and chatting with Mikey like some normal boy.
Caleb was so focused on Xan that he failed to see that Xan was already making his move, but on Mikey. Mikey had always been so much shorter than Caleb so the big jock didn't even notice the extra inch on him. If he had been paying close attention, he would have seen that very slowly, so slowly it was almost unnoticeable, that Mikey was growing just a little bit bigger. Each bite of his breakfast seemed to convert itself into instant body mass, filling things out here, growing something there, very subtle growth all around. By the time Mikey had finished his plate, he had gained 4 and a half pounds of muscle and another quarter inch of height.
As much as he wanted to stay and keep an eye on Xan, Caleb had practice to go to. He was tempted to skip it just so he can watch the kid, but he just couldn't...for some unexplained reason.
Of course, the reason was Xan. As he watched Caleb head off for practice, he grinned broadly. Now it was time for the fun to start!
