It had come to the point that if Aveline wanted to kill time, she could count the number of times she had counted the celling tiles in her office; the number of the former being far higher than that latter. It had been nearly, what? Three years since she became Guard Captain? It had been three years since Hawke’s expedition into the deep roads, and she had become Captain of the Guard a short while before that, so three years and a few months. And by the Maker was it boring. Aveline had assumed that Jeven hardly even left his office because he was lazy and corrupt, but there was actually a crippling amount of paper work that kept her trapped in her office most days. Most days she had to take her meals inside her office while going over reports. The only times she ever went out in the fields was when she went on one of Hawke’s ‘adventures’, and the last ‘adventure’ she went on was the Deep Roads Expedition… three years ago…
Three years of doing justice behind a desk had certainly had an effect on Aveline’s body. Her cheeks had filled out a second chin had formed under her first, rounding out her face. She had to have her armor modified several times as her stomach needed more and more room, and more and more space needed to be covered. She had even broken her desk chair just by sitting in it, and she wasn’t even wearing her armor! If Aveline had to guess she would say she had put on at least a hundred pounds, though she didn’t know since she hadn’t had the courage to step on one in over a year, when it told her she had gained seventy pound. She has seen recruits sign up larger than her and finish training thin and fit many times, and it embarrassed her greatly.
The idea of giving up the position so she could get back in the field and lose the weight, but she didn’t trust anyone else to be Guard Captain. It felt like she was going to spend the rest of her life behind this desk getting fatter and more out of shape until she was no longer fit to be a guard.
“Hello, hello~” Hawke greeted, knocking on the office door only after she had entered. It’d been far to long since Aveline saw the raven haired woman with crystal blue eyes, but it didn’t look like she had aged a day since they had first met. The rouge had a wide smile on her face that just screamed that she was about to get herself into trouble, or do something dangerous. No doubt Hawke would want Aveline to join in on whatever misadventures she was about to go on. And Aveline couldn’t have been happier to see it.
They made some small talk, first, of course. About Hawke’s new wealth. How Aveline was settling as Captain. The Viscount and the guards, the Templars. Just about everything except for Aveline’s added weight. Either Hawke didn’t notice, or she was too polite to bring it up, and both were unlikely. There must have been some other reason. However the topic of going out with her, Merrill, and Isabela came up, and she jumped (figuratively) at the opportunity to go with them before she figured out what it was.
