Minutes later, I caught Jack Stone at his own locker in another hall. He was my height with Chon's build and John Doe's steel cold eyes. He saw me approach and brushed a lock of his black hair aside before handing me a slip of paper. "What is this?" Courtly, I demanded.
"A permission slip from Dean Elvira." Serious, Jack replied. "We Ironclads cover our bases."
I looked at the permission slip and saw that it had granted Jack a one time use of magical artifacts to play a harmless prank on Jessica. "You know she will prank you back."
Jack nodded. "I expect it." Calmly, he replied. "Only I give you my word that will be the end of it between the two of us."
I nodded, satisfied for the moment. "What brings you to Starmage Academy?"
"As heir to the throne of all Ironclads, it is my sworn duty to learn all about this world's equivalent, the Roughnecks." Serious, Jack replied. "This academy provides the best training in that field."
Again, I nodded. "I heard the ironclads have their own governing body." Calmly, I said. "Are you trying to encourage that here?"
Jack shook his head. "If there is to be a governing body of Roughnecks, it will have to be them and them alone who spearhead it." Calmly, he replied. "What worked for us may not be the ideal solution for them."
"Why do you and Jessica prank each other?" Curious, I asked.
Jack gave the hint of a smile. "We are human, Ryan Carlson." Calmly, he said. "We cannot be serious all the time. If we dare do that, we risk losing what makes us human."
As I took my leave of Jack, he called out, "I have heard a rumor that a new coven and mad science collective are searching for recruits. They use pranks to test those who they see as potential talent."
"Great..." Frowning, I muttered. "Just great."
